On Tuesday after 60 days, our campaign to raise $60,000.00 to build our musician revenue share system, replace our recording and video equipment and get a new piano, will be over. It's been a fascinating and stressful two months. I really learned a lot and advanced my ideas about how the system should work and what it will be all about. We got a tremendous amount of support from the press and media, overwhelming support from the musicians and a lot of contributions, enough to really do what we set out to do.
In case you're hearing about it for the first time, we intend to make our extensive archive of audio and videos from the last 6 years (more than 7000 recordings) available for subscription. Our goal is to build a website to present this material and to keep track of all the usage so as to share the revenue fairly with all of the artists who have performed at the club. Our model is unique, here are the particulars:
Every show at Smalls will be recorded (video and audio) and broadcast for free live.
The show will be re-broadcast once for 24 hours and then placed in our archive.
The archive will be available for a small subscription fee. Subscribers will also have the option to download the audio for an additional fee.
The revenue from these subscriptions will be pooled and distributed to the artists based on the number of minutes they were listened to in a 3 month period.
All musicians on a concert will get credited for listening time. In this way, side-musicians will be rewarded in the same way as the leader of the date.
Musicians will be paid as long as their content is available in the archive every quarter.
Musicians will be given 100% ownership of the recordings to do with as they wish with the caveat that SmallsLIVE can include it in the archive and make it available to the public.
Revenue will also be used to subsidize club costs and for a special fund we call The Harry Whitaker Foundation - a charitable foundation to help jazz musicians in financial need.
We have been experimenting with using YouTube as the platform for our live video. Live streaming is a new feature of YouTube (debut in June of this year). The advantage of YouTube is that there is no charge for the use of the bandwidth as well as the world-wide exposure that YouTube can bring. There are some technical challenges that we are discovering but we feel they can be surmounted and that we can bring high-quality live streaming through that platform.
To the current subscribers to the live feed: you have been at the vanguard of support for this project and I personally thank each one of you for your faith in Smalls and your trust. You will be receiving a separate email later this week addressing your concerns as we make the switch to a free stream. You will be able to choose to switch to our archive subscription or entitled to a refund for time that you may have paid for in advance.
We truthfully feel that we can make great strides with this new paradigm - free stream and paid subscription archive. We think we can get world-exposure and create a revenue stream that will benefit all of the musicians who perform at the club as well as the club itself.
My most heartfelt thanks goes out to every person who has subscribed, donated to our campaign or aided in any way through posts, articles or anything else. Thank you to our community.

THIS WEEK AT SMALLS JAZZ CLUB
Monday - This Monday we start our September off with a classic double-header. At 7:30 PM is Peter Bernstein performing solo guitar. These solo shows have been getting more and more popular. Watch for Peter's Solo Guitar - Live At Smalls CD coming out in the next few weeks. At 10PM is Ari Hoenig and his excellent quartet featuring Tivon Pennicott, Shai Maestro & Johanness Weidenmuller.
Tuesday - We welcome back the Smalls Legacy Band. This hard hitting group features Frank Lacy, Josh Evans, Theo Hill, Stacy Dillard, Rashaan Carter & Kush Abadie. If you haven't heard them yet, please don't hesitate. At Midnight is our afterhours jam session led by Kyle Poole.
Wednesday & Thursday - this week I'm delighted to present an old comrade and a true jazz-warrior, bassist Eric Revis and his group. This is the first time that Eric is leading a band at Smalls (he's played here dozens of times as a side-man). In his group is the fascinating Bill McHenry on tenor, Darius Jones on alto and Chad Taylor playing the drums. It should be an exciting two-night stand at the club. Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday showcases drummer Jaz Sawyer and his quartet the "NYC4" with Elena Pinderhughes, Samora Pinderhughes and Ben Wolfe.
Friday & Saturday we are showcasing trombonist Clifton Anderson and his quintet. Clifton has for many years been Sonny Rollins' right hand man. He's also a great leader. In his band is the fiery Eric Wyatt on tenor, Tada Unno (fresh from his week at the Village Vanguard with Jimmy Cobb) on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass and the wonderful Steve Williams on drums. For our early shows we present two veteran tenor players. On Friday is the beautiful and profound Joel Press with the Tardo Hammer trio. On Saturday is Ralph Lalama and his group "Bop Juice". Sure to be a great weekend.
Sunday - we are happy to have the unique and great Johnny O'Neal back again with his trio at 10PM. Afterhours we are featuring Dmitry Baevsky and his quartet. Dmitry is a pristine improvisor and real swinger. Come out and share your Sunday night with us.
As always I thank you for your support of this music and our club. I hope to see you at Smalls in person and urge you to do good deeds and be compassionate to all living things!
