Dear Friends:

It was great to have a small group of students from The Prins Claus Conservatory in New York last week.  After teaching there the week before and trying to communicate about New York City and what it means jazz-wise, I was psyched to have this group here one week later for their spring break.  They were literally agog with the sights and sounds of the city.  I love putting myself into the perspective of someone who's never been here before and try to imagine the impression that the city could have.  As a life-long New Yorker I'm still awestruck.  I forget how overwhelming it can be for newbies, particularly when it comes to jazz music.  The hard-boiled jazz veterans (who love to grump and complain) forget about the riches that we posses in The Big Apple - Smalls, Mezzrow, The Vanguard, The Standard, Dizzy's, Smoke, Fat Cat, 55 Bar, etc, etc, - wow - it's really a lot of music.  On any given night one can still wander about the island and hear fantastic jazz music everywhere.  Jazz is not dead, that's for sure.  On top of that you add the Metropolitan Opera, the rock clubs, the blues clubs, the Salsa clubs, etc etc.  You have, to paraphrase Hemingway, "a moveable feast" of music.  It's nice to see that and see young people excited to listen and participate and to learn.  We must not forget how great New York City is and how rich we are in our culture, the true legacy of American culture that exists here, alive and well - jazz music!

As usual, we have a ton of great music at both clubs, east and west corners of 10th street and 7th ave.  Come on out and participate in the feast.  Gorge yourself on the "all you can eat" bebop and above.  I certainly hope to see you here.

If you haven't yet - I urge you to become a subscribing member of SmallsLIVE.  For just $10/month, you get unlimited access to our extensive (8 years worth) audio/video archive.  Your subscription dollars are directly paid to the artists themselves and the to subsidize club costs.  Each week we add about 30 new shows.  It's an amazing resource and I do hope you consider supporting us.  Here's the link --->  SMALLSLIVE
