February 2nd, 2015

Dear Friends:

After a slow start to the week (Monday no-show blizzard shut us down completely and then dampened the next few days), we finally got rolling on Thursday with Duane Eubanks and the hometown heroes of Abe Burton, Dez Douglas and Eric McPherson (Emac) for a strong show.  We then had a strong weekend.  Particularly great was having Harry Allen at Mezzrow (with the astonishing Rossano Sportiello at the piano) and Victor Goold at Smalls with his excellent ensemble that featured our old friend Myron Walden and our young new friends Godwin Louis and Billy Buss.  Saturday night both clubs were humming and I breathed a sigh of relief.  My partner Mitch Borden is so wise that he serenely rides through all ups and downs.  Me, I panic!  One or two quiet nights and I'm sure it's the end of the world.  Anyway, nothing does my heart good as seeing a nice packed club at 2:30 AM filled with musicians having a jam session.  As long as there's A HANG, I'm fine.  Smalls and Mezzrow are communal-style clubs and I like to see the folks out and hanging.

Nothing much to report except that we're really looking forward to the NEW STEINWAY at Mezzrow, which should be coming this week - i'll keep everyone updated.  Also, we've instituted a new policy where if you pay a cover charge at Mezzrow then you can also enter Smalls, and it's good for the whole night.  So, if you want to spend the evening bouncing back and forth now it's easier than ever.  Remember: the clubs are on opposite corners of West 10th street, takes 10 seconds to reach one to the other.

My best wishes to all and hope to see you downtown.

NOW: A cover paid at Mezzrow also gets you admission to Smalls.
