Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - June 20th, 2016

Dear Friends:

Still thinking about my man Kirk Lightsey and his visit to New York and Smalls/Mezzrow last week.  Kirk, who's been an expatriate living in Paris for the last 20 years, has finally been coming back to New York to play and hang.  Last week we set up a series of gigs for him and brought him over and it's been an absolute pleasure to have him on the scene.  Kirk, who was Dexter Gordon's pianists for years, is now 79 years old and as sprightly as any jam-sessioning youngster.  It's been wonderful to see him hanging out late (and I mean really late) night after night.  Kirk was the energy center during the Bradley's era and has some hanging-out chops like you've never seen.  But what was most beautiful was watching him participate at the jam sessions.  He would get up there and play with musicians 50 years younger than himself and just school them all!  I watched him coax the drummers and the horn players, urging them on with his comping and gestures.  After the tune was over, Kirk would be at the piano with a group of young players gathered about him, showing them the changes and chord suggestions.  It was revitalizing and refreshing.  I'd like to put together a Kirk Lightsey fund to bring his butt back to New York permanently - lord knows the jazz scene needs him.  It was great to have a real master hanging out, sharing, teaching and enlightening all of his with his great experience and infectious spirit.

Speaking of teaching, I'm on my way this week to participate in the InJazz conference in Rotterdam, where I've been asked to speak on the subject "Running A Jazz Club In New York"  (not sure what I'm going to say, honestly, but probably talk about patience and faith...).  What I'm really excited about is that I'm going to announce our new educational initiative that we are entering into with the Prinz Claus Conservatory in the Netherlands to do an actual weekly SmallsLIVE class as part of their curriculum.  This course will be taught virtually and will involve the students watching the live stream and also accessing our audio/video archive to observe actual shows in a jazz club and then to transcribe and study the music and the artists.  It will be the fulfillment of a vision that was started four years ago when we began to build our site.  A very exciting time!

Speaking of the audio/video archive, we are slowly building our membership base.  The free membership gets you access to our live stream each night but the $10/monthly membership gets you unlimited access to our audio/video archive (now at over 11,000 recordings).  This monthly fee is distributed to the artists through our revenue share royalty system.  Part of the funds collected subsidizes the clubs themselves.  Our goal is 5000 subscribing members.  If we can hit that number than it would be a game changer in terms of the economics of the club - the rent on the clubs could be paid through our online revenue.  This would then free up money for better salaries for the artists as well as more flexibility in what we can do or program.  If you're a free member now, please consider supporting SmallsLIVE by becoming a subscribing member.  This archive is an amazing treasure and your support goes directly to the musicians and the clubs.

I wish everyone a great week and hope to see you all downtown.

Regards,

Spike
