SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
September 10th, 2018

I know it's easy to get negative during this somewhat dark period.  But I do want to say that from my perspective there's so much hard work and dedicated artistry going on at Smalls and Mezzrow that I am always left inspired.  Even though my work is hard and, occasionally, we get a bad review on Google or Yelp, I still feel that we are doing great things at the clubs.  There's a whole new batch of twenty-somethings coming on strong and showing some perseverance, hanging late into the night and consistently.  What impresses me more is the veteran artists (my age and up) who are there night after night.  I have to single out the great Roy Hargrove, a true master and original voice on his instrument.  Roy is world famous and one the most revered players on the scene and yet he comes faithfully to the sessions each night.  Roy and I have had conversations where he expresses his concern for the younger musicians and how much he wants to share his experience with them.  He is filled with compassion and a true Jazz Bodhisattva - just giving and sharing.  Thank God for him and that he is available to us.  A lot of folks just sit at home writing snarky comments on Facebook or act like they know something.  Roy just plays - he let's his horn and experience do the talking for him.

Our course at the New School - SmallsLIVE: Profiles From The Contemporary Jazz Scene - has been a real success.  The class is at capacity and we've already had two guests, Smalls founder Mitch Borden (who was wonderful to hear talk about the history of the club) and then last week we had Joel Frahm.  Joel also gave a wonderful class with some pertinent dialogue with the students.  We have some amazing guest speakers coming during the rest of the semester including Peter Bernstein, Sullivan Fortner, Abe Burton, Ari Hoenig and many others.  We were also given a commitment for the second semester.  This is really excited for us and an unusual way to indoctrinate students to musicians who are truly current.

I hope everyone has a great and peaceful week. Please check our schedule and come by the clubs if you can make it or tune in on our live stream.

Regards,

Spike
