July 29th, 2013

Dear Friends:

I’ve just had word that Sofia’s is closing.  I’m not sure how many of you would know about Sofia’s.  It was an Italian restaurant in the heart of Times Square.  Sofia’s was like a time capsule: 1976 New York trapped in amber - the same décor the same awful food (really bad) and the same clientele.  But there was a piano in the bar area and, for the last 35 years or so, Jazz was played there.  Michael Fuller, the manager and a saxophonist himself, quietly made an impact on the Jazz scene by hiring the best pianists in New York to play night after night to a mostly indifferent crowd.  Sofia's was a long gig.  The sets and break times were meticulously taped to a card inside of the piano, just so you wouldn’t forget.  If you wanted dinner, which was part of the deal, you had to walk down a set of treacherous stairs into one of the truly foulest kitchens you could imagine - full of irate chefs and waiters who glared and hated your guts.  The pay was paltry, a typical New York City gig - kind of a breaker but in the end you got to play some great music, which was the point and why so many pianists played there.

A gig like at Sofia’s used to be all over Manhattan.  I made my living for years just playing in restaurants - solo piano, duo.  You made a small amount of bread but could eat and got to play.  No one thought twice about Sofia’s being a special place because it wasn’t.  But… it was!  As things get rarer, they take on a specialness.  You begin to understand the value when it’s not there.  New York has changed a lot.  Now it’s quite rare to find a restaurant with a piano in it and, for that matter, it’s rare to find a Jazz club.  There was a time when no one thought too much of Smalls.  Smalls was just one joint out of many and now it's rare and thus valuable.  As places like Sofia’s or like Sally’s Record Shop go out of business, the spark of personality disappears from the landscape.  Jazz music is in danger as the environment evaporates.  What will happen to Jazz when all of the joints are gone?  Sahara…

Smalls Musician Revenue Share Project

Our campaign to fund our Musician Revenue Share project is chugging along.  We're around $17K at this writing.  People ask me “how’s the campaign going?” and I say that regardless whether we hit our goal or not it’s been a success.  We’ve gotten a lot of nice press and real interest in the project.  Also, there’s been a lot of moral support from the musicians.  I’ve had great dialogue with prominent artists and feel that they support our idea and that it will work.  I’ve also retained a top copyright attorney to advise us on proper licensing for copyrights so that we do everything kosher.  The project will happen whether we hit the financial goal or not.  We’ve got momentum.

If you want more information on our campaign, please click www.smallslive.com If you can spread the word or make a contribution we do appreciate it.

This Week At Smalls

On Monday I'm really psyched to have an old friend and original Smalls musician back at the club - pianist Jason Lindner who will be coming in with his trio.  Playing bass is the legendary Juni Booth and the amazing Eric McPherson on drums.  Don't miss this rare show.

Tuesday night I'll be there with my trio from 7:30 to 10 PM, fresh from our whirlwind Canadian tour (1 gig).  After us is the really cool nonet led by Lucas Pino.  It's chock full of great young musicians who all contribute to the book and play their butts off.  Please come out and hear this band and the work their doing.  It's great.

On Wednesday and Thursday I'm happy to feature my dear friend Yotam Silberstein and his trio.  Yotam has been rapidly rising in terms of his prominence.  He's a terrific player and is coming in with Glen Zeleski on piano, Barak Mori on bass and Jochen Rueckert on drums.   For our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday we are really lucky to have the amazing Dominick Farinacci and his group which features Zaccai Curtis, Lawrence Leathers and Keita Ogawa.  It will definitely be a great evening of music.  On Thursday we have our resident Carlos Abadie and his excellent quintet for the midnight show.

This weekend we are featuring drummer Quincy Davis and a fantastic quintet which showcases Jimmy Greene on tenor, Steve Nelson on vibes, Aaron Goldberg on piano and Vicente Archer on bass.  This is an all-star group and I'm sure the house will be packed.  On Friday at 7:30 PM we have our resident Ralph LaLama and his group "Bop Juice", which features the legendary Clifford Barbaro on drums and Mike Karn on bass.  Our Saturday 7:30 show presents the remarkable trumpet veteran Richie Vitale and his quintet with Frank Basile, Nial Djuliarso, Paul Gill & Clifford Barbaro.

Our Sunday is an all-day affair starting at 1PM with Marion Cowings and his vocal workshop.  At 4:30 PM is the tasteful and erudite John Merrill and his "Norville Trio" tribute to Red Norvo and features Tom Beckham on vibes and Sean Cronin on bass.  At 7:30 PM we have another amazing guitarist, Chris Flory who is coming in with his guitar counterpart Joe Cohn & Lee Hudson on bass.  At 10PM we have the amazing Johnny O'Neal and his fantastic trio.  Our "Round Midnight" concert features the complex and challenging Ned Goold and his trio.

Please come on out to Smalls this week.  Our free video show will be on Wednesday night.  If you've not checked out our live stream then please do so on Wednesday.  Also, check out our Smalls Interview Blog which features and interview this week with guitarist Yotam Silberstein.  CLICK HERE.

Downbeat highlights Harold Mabern:  Live at Smalls as a July 2013 Editors' Pick

"From the beautiful opening lines of “Alone Together,” the incredible old-school Broadway gem, you know you’re in for a pure joyride.  Mabern has irresistible charm as an improviser. He’s all power, touch and technique—a rare and wonderful artist on the piano... â€œAfro Blue,” sums up his artistry and inventiveness—boundless." - Frank Alkyer
