Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - March 20th, 2017
Dear Friends:

Greetings from Winnipeg, Canada.  I'm here this weekend at the invitation of Steve and Anna-Lisa Kirby, who run the jazz department at The University of Manitoba.  Steve and Anna-Lisa took a virtually non-existent program and over the last 10 years converted it into one of the most dynamic jazz departments around.  They began to hire top-notch jazz artists from New York such as Quincy Davis, Jon Gordon, Derrick Gardner, Jimmy Greene and many others to form a strong jazz family in the wintry north of Canada.  I was invited to give a workshop on Friday and the students were attentive, eager and all of them could play at a high level.  I was seriously impressed by their commitment and unabashed enthusiasm for the music.  Anna-Lisa spoke with passion about jazz and her and Steve's commitment to propagating this music and making it happen for young people.  Like great jazz educators world-wide, Anna-Lisa and Steve are hardworking and modest, not often in the limelight but beloved by their students and fueled by the spiritual rewards of their work.

I was thrilled, of course, that nearly all the students knew about Smalls and SmallsLIVE and either watched the live stream or used the archive for study.  Many had been to Smalls themselves and had amazing impressions about the club.  Last night and today I got to play a few concerts at a lovely Jewish community center hosted by the Asper Foundation, a group that funds concerts for the community.  Together with Ryan Kisor on trumpet, Joel Frahm on tenor and my steadfast rhythm team of Tyler Mitchell and Anthony Pinciotti, we played for a highly appreciative, sold-out audience of jazz enthusiasts.  I've remarked on this many times but I am always touched and amazed by the pockets of jazz family situated around the world.  Jazz people are the same everywhere - generally highly intelligent people, good natured and eager for good jazz.  It always leads me to think of jazz music as a unifying force world-wide.  That somehow, we can solve our differences through the level playing field of this music.  Cultural boundaries disappear, languages disappears, racial and other distinction disappear into the invisible joy of music, which is formless and without any physical manifestation.  Jazz enters our ears and goes right to our soul, directly.  Jazz is a music of peace and unity and represents the very best Humanity has to offer.  This lesson is proven to me over and over again whenever I tour or whenever I simply look over the audience at Smalls, which is drawn from every quarter of the Earth.  Jazz is Peace and available to everyone who wants it.

Regards,

Spike
