Hello Friends:

Newtown One Year Anniversary

It's been exactly one year now since the horrible events in Newtown, Ct.  It's mind-boggling to imagine that that this nightmare really happened but it did.  Our friend and esteemed member of our jazz community, Jimmy Greene, lost his beautiful 6 year old daughter Ana that day.  Since then Jimmy and his wife Nelba have been pillars of strength, demonstrating grace and poise that is truly heroic.  The power of their faith and Jimmy's music has kept them strong, enduring something that few could come through intact.  I want to remind everyone not to forget Ana or what happened that day.  Also, please realize that there has been no change in our gun control laws since then - nothing.  Jimmy - we at Smalls stand behind you and send your family our love and support.  LOVE WINS!

I also want to include a link to a wonderful and touching short video - Jimmy Greene writing a letter to himself.  Please watch - CLICK HERE.

Jim Hall

One of the truly great masters of this music passed away this week - guitarist Jim Hall.  I had the privilege of knowing and studying with Jim years ago at The New School.  In class Jim was funny and sharp-witted.  He was also generous with his time and kind.  He personified the kind of high-class person that I wanted to be as a jazz musician.  As we all know, his playing was subtle, lyrical and beautiful.  Modern and yet grounded in the long tradition of this music.

I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Keith Jarrett perform his 30th year anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall.  It was profound and beautiful.  Also, in a way, simple.  Keith just played tunes, played some be-bop and swung.  It was refreshing!  At 68 years old Keith is still high-energy and cutting edge.  It made me realize how important it is to go out and hear the masters when you can - don't pass up an opportunity!  Life is tenuous and passes quickly.  Support the music by going out and seeking it.  We still have handful of great ones performing.  Don't take it for granted - life is precious and so is great music.

This Week At Smalls:

Monday:

We start our week with a solo guitar show from guitarist Paul Meyers.  Paul is a lyrical player with a penchant for Brazilian music.  Following Paul is another guitarist Mike Moreno and his group.  He's bringing in Jon Cowherd on piano (fresh from his week at The Vanguard with Brian Blade), Doug Weiss on bass and Justin Brown on drums.  Stay late and catch Spencer Murphy and his after-hours jam session.

Tuesday:

The 7:30 to 10PM set is a duet with the alto saxophonist Mike Hashim and pianist Conal Fowkes.  Mike is sea of music knowledge with a deep repertoire.  Conal is an amazing pianist and best known for his work with Woody Allen.  In fact, all the piano music on Woody's latest film in Conal.  At 10:30 PM is Lucas Pino and his excellent Nonet.  At 1AM is the afterhour jam session led by Kyle Poole and the gang.

Wed. & Thur:

This Wednesday and Thursday we present "Infinity", the quartet of bassist Joe Sanders.  Joe is a highly in-demand sideman but also an excellent leader.  In this group his presents a chordless variation with Ben Van Gelder on alto and Ben Wendel on tenor.  Kendrick Scott is the drummer.  Our Wednesday "Round Midnight" concert features guitarist Jure Pukl who is coming in with pianist Leo Genovese, drummer Justin Brown and (now as sideman) Joe Sanders.

Fri. & Sat -

Our 10:30 PM show features another great bass player who is generally in demand as a sideman but is also a great leader - Dezron Douglas.  In this quintet Dezron brings in rarely heard tenor saxophonist Ron Sutton, alto Lummie Spann, Richard Johnson on piano and the wonderful Jason Brown on drums.

Our Friday 7:30 PM show features one of the great pianists on the scene - Ted Rosenthal.  Ted has an amazing touch and plays a wide-variety of repertoire.  In his trio is Noriko Ueda on bass and Tim Horner on drums.  On Saturday at 7:30 PM we have the soft-spoken (but carries a big stick) Joel Press and his excellent quartet with Michael Kanan on piano, Boots Maleson on bass and Fuku Tainaka on drums.

Sunday:

As always we start the day with Marion Cowings vocal workshop.  At 7:30 PM we feature bassist Charnett Moffett with his trio.  At 10PM is the great Johnny O'Neal and for our "Round Midnight" show we have one of the finest trumpet players you'll hear - Alex Norris and his quintet with Ari Ambrose on tenor, Jeremy Manasia on piano, Paul Gill on bass and Brian Floody on drums.

As always, I urge you to do good deeds and be compassionate to others and yourself.  Thank you for your support of this music and the club.  Hope to see you at Smalls.
