Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - January 23rd, 2017
Dear Friends:

Last Wednesday evening I was talking to my old friend Joe Farnsworth as he was setting up for his trio gig with the estimable Harold Mabern.  "You never write anything about me, Chief...", says Farns to me with a dopy grin.  Farns love to break your balls about anything - but in a loving good spirit and always funny- we've clowned around like this since freshman year back in the day.  But I thought about it and told him- "you know, you're right" - because Farns is a guy that, in my estimation, is one of the strongest and most authoritative jazz-spirits on our current scene.  Joe Farnsworth, simply put, is one of the best drummers playing today and there's not a single drummer playing that won't agree with that statement.  He's ferocious behind the drums - creative and super hard swinging.  But Joe is so studied - he knows and reveres the tradition so passionately that everything he plays is infused with authenticity.  Joe is for real.  I remember when were kids and he lived in the apartment upstairs from me.  He had taken some old mattresses and tied them to the walls of his bedroom (which was already tiny).  It looked like the classic "insane asylum" cell with the padded walls.  But this muffled the sound enough so that he could continuously practice, which he did, incessantly.  Joe's work ethic was unparalleled in my clique - and we were a seriously hard practicing group.

Through the years I've watched Joe rise swiftly and dedicatedly through the ranks to work in the very highest circles professionally.  His main clique of guys (in my mind always the "Augies" cats), Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, Steve Davis, David Hazeltine - all represented to me the highest ideals of the jazz artist: consummate skill, commitment to tradition, forward thinking mindset and the drive to really swing.  But Joe is also seriously and lovingly dedicated to the scene itself.  He, like myself, feels a sense of duty to continue the living tradition of Jazz in New York City.  At Smalls, at his request, he has embraced a late night slot so that he can bring in younger players and at the same time set an example by playing with Harold Mabern.  Harold, who's 80 years old, plays harder than anyone with an electrifying energy that elevates the audience and the club.  Transformative power.

Anyway, Joe, here's a little shout out for you and for all the years that you've given.  I'm sure all my colleagues will agree with me - we need you out here, bro and thank's, Chief.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs!

Regards,

Spike
