SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

February 10th, 2014

Hello Friends:

I wanted to mention that last Friday I had my seventh year anniversary of becoming a partner and manager at Smalls Jazz Club.  I had no idea of what I was getting myself into when I mortgaged my apartment and went in with my friend Lee Kostrinsky and "bought Smalls"  (I put this in quotes because the idea of "owning" Smalls seems absurd to me to this day. Smalls is a living entity - it owns me!)  Those seven years went awfully quickly.  If I may quote the Diamond Sutra:

So you should view this fleeting world --
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream,
A flash of lightening in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.

So it seems to me, a dream, but a beautiful one.  I'd never trade those seven years for anything.  I consider myself truly blessed by the opportunity I've been given - and the responsibility.

The person who never seems to get enough credit, in my opinion, is the true creator and founder of Smalls, Mitch Borden (who celebrates his birthday on Tuesday).  I met Mitch the very first week of Smalls' inception back in April of 1994.  There's an awful lot that can be said about Mitch and, of all the humans that I've know, he truly deserves a book and statue.  Mitch Borden is a man who truly gives everything over to this music.  Whole generations of musicians (myself included) owe Mitch for the loving care that they received through the hot-house incubator that is Smalls.  Mitch works each day, tirelessly and with enthusiasm, preparing his club for the evenings festivities.  He lovingly puts everything right back in place, each photo in its special significant location - Smalls is like a church (I'd like to write the cosmology of Smalls), full of relics, symbols and idols.  There's something magical in getting the vibe just right.  Mitch lives his life like a philosopher - with a whimsical and humorous approach to all situations - he never gets flustered.  Perennially calm, he tends to his duties with a smile for everyone and (nearly) never an unkind word.  Mitch Borden is an unsung hero and a great man.  One day the world will know.  So if you're around on Tuesday come by and give Mitch a birthday greeting.  Thank you, Mitch Borden.

This Week At Smalls

MONDAY:

We start of week at 7:30 PM with pianist Brenda Earle and her quartet.  Joining her is Pete McCann on guitar, Matt Aronoff on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums.  Brenda is a marvelous player and doesn't get heard too often.  Please take the time to check her out.  Following her at 10:15 PM is Ari Hoenig and his quintet.  He's got the ultra-creative front line of Tivon Pennicott (Monk Competition Finalist) on tenor and Gilad Hekselman on guitar.  Eden Ladin is on piano and Orlando Leflemming on bass.

TUESDAY:

At 7:30 PM I'll be there to perform on the new Steinway.  As of this writing I'm not sure who I'll be playing with yet - perhaps solo.  At 10:30 PM is the amazing John Eckert and his NY Jazz 9, a serious nonet of New York veterans - David Smith, Bobby Porcelli, Rick Parker, Nick Grinder, Terry Goss, Tim Harrison, Paul Gill and Andy Watson.  This will be a great show.

WEDNESDAY:

We have nice double-header starting with the young pianist Victor Gould and his sextet.  Joining him is the wonderful Godwin Louis on alto, Troy Roberts on tenor, Billy Buss on trumpet, Alex Claffy on bass and John Davis on drums.  At Midnight we feature veteran drummer Rob Garcia who comes in with an all-star quartet showcasing Noah Preminger on tenor sax, Dan Tepfer on piano and Joe Martin on bass.

THURSDAY:

I'm psyched to present one of my very favorite pianists - Luis Perdomo.  Luis is a startlingly proficient instrumentalist and composer.  He's coming in with his quartet that features Mark Shim on tenor, Joe Sanders on bass and Rodney Green on drums.  This will be a great show.

FRI & SAT:

This weekend for the 10:30 PM show we have one of the true greats of the trumpet - Ryan Kisor.  If you've never had the chance to hear Ryan lead a group I would strongly advise coming out for this.  This is going to be a powerful jazz group with some amazing solos.  Grant Stewart joins him on tenor and the rhythm section is the hard hitting Peter Zak, John Webber and Willie Jones III.

The 7:30 PM show on Friday showcases the profound Tardo Hammer and his classic trio with Lee Hudson and Jimmy Wormworth.  On Saturday our 7:30 PM show is the wonderful Grant Stewart who is coming in (before playing with Ryan's group) with Tardo on piano, David Wong on bass and Phil Stewart on drums.

SUNDAY:

This Sunday please come out to see the jazz legend Bucky Pizzarelli perform with his duet partner Ed Laub.  They start at 7:30 PM.  Following Bucky is the legendary Johnny O'Neal in his usual Sunday evening slot.  Our "Round Midnight" show is the enigmatic, challenging and profound Ned Goold and his quartet with Sacha Perry on piano, Reid Taylor on bass and Ned's son, Charles Goold on drums.

My sincerest thanks to everyone over the years that has made Smalls what it is.  I look forward to another seven years and more and hope to see all of you at the club.

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner
