Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - June 6th, 2016

Dear Friends:

Greetings from Castelvetro di Modena - a beautiful medieval village located just north of the city of Modena in Northern Italy.  Thanks to a collaborative effort with Italian promoter Guilio Vannini and his company, Rat Pack Music, we began the first year of the Castelvetro Jazz Festival.  SmallsLIVE has been an integral part of this festival's concept, which is the marriage of music education and concerts, free to the public.  About 30 jazz students of varying levels enrolled for our daily workshop which lasted the four days of the festival.  Each afternoon we discussed jazz and particularly the New York City jazz tradition - jam sessions and club etiquette.  For the last four days we rehearsed a set and who would be the soloists - everyone participated!  Drummer Anthony Pinciotti and bassist Tyler Mitchel (my "Intergalactic Trio") who were with me, coached the rhythm section and we whipped this group into shape.  Everyone had a lot of fun. I feel like we really communicated a positive lesson about jazz music.  Tonight is the final concert where we play outdoors in the town square.  The students will play first and then our trio.

Each evening, after the workshops, the trio performed in various venues in the area.  Last night we played at a beautiful club called "Panama Beach", which is located in the town of Porto Garibaldi on the Adriatic coast - about one hour from Modena.  The club is decorated in 1960's chic and the walls adorned with photos of Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk.  The owner Davide Friso and artistic director Alessandro Mistri gave a big speech before we played and then presented me with a gift, a tapestry with the Panama Beach logo.  The translator explained to me that it was to signify the connection between their club and the famous Smalls Jazz Club of New York.  Everyone here knows Smalls - it seems to occupy an almost legendary place in their minds.  New York seems so exotic and far away and they know about our basement club.  I graciously accepted the honor and then played a concert for a truly sympathetic audience.  As has always been my experience in Italy, the Italian audiences are always gracious and warm.  I might add that I drank some of the greatest wine of my life this week!  I want to extend my thanks to Giacomo Barbari, María José Galindo and Stefano Calzolari who worked so hard with us this week.  The spirit of Jazz is very much alive in Modena!

Meanwhile back in New York City my noble and hard-working staff has been holding down the forts, most likely relieved that I've not been there breathing down their necks...

As always there's a great lineup at both clubs - please check out our website and consider becoming a subscribing member of SmallsLIVE and gain access to our ever-growing archive of music.  I am also very exited to announce the start of our SmallsLIVE Education Blog - we'll be posting transcriptions and analysis from our shows.  CLICK HERE to check it out.

Regards,

Spike
