SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter

Dear Friends:

I've said it before and I'll say it again:Jazz is grassroots.  It's the people's music.  It's a music that may not be commercially viable and is certainly misunderstood but people seem to really love it when they can get it.  This weekend was the Jersey City Jazz Festival which took place near the Grove Street PATH station.  The street was blocked off and throngs of people came out on two beautiful days to walk around and check out the four stages that were presenting Jazz music all afternoon.  Festival director Bryan Beninghove and his not-for-profit called Riverview Jazz did a huge amount of work fundraising, getting permits, organizing volunteers and scheduling performances.  Bryan reached out to me to see if I wanted to get SmallsLIVE involved.  This was the very first festival sponsorship for our own not-for-profit, the SmallsLIVE Foundation and an exciting prospect for our own mission and future.  We were given a budget and a stage that was very club-esque and we programmed two afternoons of "Smalls" bands.  The hard work paid off and the festival was a real success.  It was packed with people, families, babies, smiling appreciative faces delighting in the music that was a gift to the city of Jersey City.  No financial gain, just a labor of love for the betterment of the community through music, Jazz music.

I've seen guys like Bryan all over the place, different cities and different countries.  Hardworking men and women who have a vision.  People who are willing to bust their butts to present a concert and champion the music they love.  No government grants or big commercial soulless corporations.  Just people who care and want to give back.  Like I said, grassroots- people helping people and sharing our cultural heritage.  Nothing elitist but really for the people to walk down a sunny hometown street and get their ear caught by some swinging sounds.  Next thing you know they are enraptured and captured and now Jazz fans in their hearts.  Love wins, music wins.  Thank you, Bryan and Riverview Jazz.  We look forward to our next collaboration.

I hope to see everyone at the clubs and wish everyone a prosperous week.

Regards,

Spike
