SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

February 24th, 2014

Hello Friends:

I wanted say a few words about one of my heroes - pianist Harold Mabern.  I met Harold years ago during my freshman year of music school.  He was teaching (and still teaches) at William Paterson College but was also doing a few lessons at the New School for Social Research where I was a student.  I was lucky to get one lesson from him at the time.  I was pretty intimidated at that time but never forgot that one lesson and his manner of teaching.  Now, in full circle, I am fortunate to have him performing at Smalls.  He's been coming in once a month now with his trio (generally Essiet Essiet on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums).  Harold always comes ready to play.  He brings with him an abundance of sound and musical power - real tried and true Jazz feeling, hard swinging and the blues.  He is mezmerizing and creates a seeming wall of sound that beckons you inside his world and absorbs you.  You leave uplifted and joyful.  As a person, Harold is a true joy.  An extremely modest man to say the least, Harold never has an unkind word to say about anyone.  He is, however, an astute observer of the Jazz scene and has the perspective of a master on the history of this music.  He is always willing to share with everyone one his experience and story.  What amazes me is his seemingly endless supply of energy.  On Saturday I know he played three sets at Smoke Jazz Club (at 106 & Broadway) and then trekked downtown to Smalls to play the after-hours set with John Webber's group starting at 1:30 AM.  As usual, without a word, he sat down and played a high-energy set that left the room stunned.  After the show he smiled kindly and sat in the audience and checked out the young musicians at the jam session.  No complaints, just compliments and happy to be among the musicians and in the club.  At 77 years old, Harold typifies what a great Jazz musician should be - a master of the instrument and his own mind and someone attuned to young players.  Also an unwavering commitment to simply playing the music with nothing else!  Thank goodness that Harold is still around and that we have him at Smalls.  Watch for him in the schedule and, please, don't miss a show!

This Week At Smalls:

Monday - We start our week with guitarist Davy Mooney and his excellent quartet that features pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Mark Ferber.  Our 10PM show brings back the "Thrasher" - drummer Gerry Gibbs.  Gerry has brought some ostentatious shows to the club in the past and this is no exception - the keyboard band with three phenomenal keyboardists - David Kikoski on the Steinway, Pat Bianchi on B3 and Theo Hill playing the Rhodes.  No bass in this group.  Come and check this one out.

Tuesday - Once again we feature Josh Evans and his 18 piece big band.  Even though they take up half the club it's well worth it to hear a band like this.  Now part of a monthly rotation, this excellent big band blows the roof off of Smalls (even though we technically have no roof).  At 7:30 PM I'll be opening for them with my trio (Paul Gill and Yotam Silberstein)

Wednesday - We're always psyched to have this great pianist at Smalls - Taylor Eigsti is coming in with his trio that features Harish Raghavan on bass and Eric Harland on drums.  Taylor is an astonishing pianist, modern thinking with a beautiful technique.  This is a killer trio so don't miss it.  Our "Round Midnight" after Taylor's show features bassist Eric Wheeler and his trio.  Eric's become more and more of a presence on the scene and is coming in with another fantastic pianist, Richard Johnson and the hard swinging drummer Chris Beck.

Thursday - We're really excited to finally get the amazing Philly-based vocalist JD Walter into the club.  If you haven't heard JD you should take this opportunity.  He's coming in with pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis and Nasheet Waits on drums.

Friday and Saturday is chock-full of great music.  Our 7:30 PM show on Friday showcases the veteran tenor saxophonist Ralph LaLama with his trio "Bop Juice" which also features Mike Karn on bass and the legendary Clifford Barbaro on drums.  Saturday at 7:30 PM is trumpet player Richie Vitale and his excellent quintet with baritone saxophonist Frank Basile, Louis Rainone on piano, Paul Gill on bass and, once again, Clifford Barbaro on drums.  Our 10:30 PM slot on both Friday and Saturday features pianist Rick Germanson and his all-star quartet with trumpet legend Dr. Eddie Henderson, Gerald Cannon on bass and the amazing Willie Jones III on drums.

Sunday-  We're always happy to have the wonderful Lezlie Harrison come into sing at 7:30.  Lezlie has a warm voice and a warm vibe.  She'll be opening for the great Johnny O'Neal at 10PM.  The "Round Midnight" show is alto saxophonist Dmitry Baevsky and his quartet with Jeb Patton on piano, Mike Karn on bass and the highly-underrated Joe Strasser at the drums set.

As always, I urge you to be compassionate to the other humans an animals that we share this planet with.  I look forward to seeing all of you at the club.

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner
