SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

March 17th, 2014

Greeting My Friends:

Now it's beginning to feel like spring - just a bit more.  It's been a great week at Smalls, though - I noticed a vitality in the crowd this week.  Each night was so good - all of the bands all week just kicking ass.  Late night hangs were also healthy (debauchery in moderation is a good thing...)  We even had a bona-fide celebrity visit from a extremely famous actor, who came in with a group of friends and relaxed to the Jeremy Manasia trio at 2:30 AM on Friday.  Nobody said a word to him - we just let him feel like a normal human-being listening to jazz at Smalls.  Also, I promised him that I wouldn't say anything but (sorry Joel) I thought it important to mention that Friday was saxophonist Joel Press' 84th birthday!  Joel is a blessing to this club and a vital presence.  His playing is as lovely and accessible as he is.  He also has a lifetime of experience, stories and wisdom that he's always glad to share. He'll be in this week on Saturday night with his quartet - come by and say hello.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the club - have a great week and remember to think compassionately.

Spike
