Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - May 15th, 2017

Dear Friends:

There’s a passage in the the Vimalakirti Sutra that describes the different “Buddha worlds” that exist throughout the universe – a countless numbers of worlds, parallel to our own, scattered infinitely.  Each world has its own Buddha to preach in the way best suited for that world.    In one such world, The Fragrant Land, everything is expressed in scent.  From Vimalakirti: “The Buddha of this land does not use words and speech to preach but uses the various fragrances to stimulate the disciples in their observance of the laws. They sit under fragrant trees and perceive how sweet the trees smell, thereby realizing wisdom.  When they realize this wisdom, they win all merits.”

This made me think of my own Buddha world – the jazz universe of Smalls wherein all Dharma is expressed in music.  Disciples come to hear, and the law is expressed in musical jazz phrases.  Moon faced Bird-Buddha opens his golden saxophone mouth and hundreds of thousands of Devas develop the Bebop mind. Supreme enlightenment served on a riff - when the musical mind is thus realized, jazz disciples win all merits.

Worlds within worlds – basement spaces, a universe of notes.  Musicians receiving historic musical mind from countless ages to the very now.  Beginners and great ones merged in a harmonious giving, receiving and then giving back.  The deep Dharma of jazz-feeling transmitting the single imperative truth from mind to mind – like one candle lighting the next.  Buddha Jazz Mind and the communion of the Spirit.  One basement, one world, one Universe – one moment.  Truth is ineffable and can be infinitely expressed – one perfectly formed swinging phrase directly from the heart to the mind and back to the heart again.

Regards,
Spike
