September 11th, 2017

I'm very happy to be spending this week in The Netherlands at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen. This week we debut our class "SmallsLIVE: Profiles from the Contemporary Jazz Scene". This is taught as a contemporary jazz history class with the goal to profile several current jazz artists who perform regularly at Smalls. We study the archived performances, interviews with the artists, transcriptions and workshop classes. By the end of the semester the student will have knowledge of Smalls Jazz Club, it's connection to the jazz culture of New York City as well as familiarity with the work of several currently performing respected jazz musicians. My thanks to Joris Tepee, the director, for having the initiative to let us create this course for his program and to Steve Altenberg, who will be teaching the class. Also my thanks to Jeff McGregor and Panas Athanatos, my SmallsLIVE Education guys, for working so hard to make this class real.

I hope everyone has a great week.  Please, as always, take the time to look over our schedule and swing by the clubs sometimes - or watch us on the stream.  Keep peace in your hearts.  This is a time of deceivement and we must view the information we are given with skepticism.  It's easy to conjure phantoms and scare everyone but a loving-kind heart and open mind will see you through.  Jazz facilitates that.

Peace in these trying times -

Spike
