SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
November 6th, 2017

Greetings from Paris - today a cool blue sky over this lovely city.  I'm about to start the second week of a self-produced tour to France and Italy.  It's been a great experience so far, exhausting and exhilarating.  Having to cover all of the bases from booking flights and hotels to managing the musicians and, finally, to play a show, it's breathing rarified air - my band, my music, my tour - the veritable ego-trip!

So far, we've played at two clubs in two cities both very different - Gregory's Jazz Club in Rome and Duc Des Lombards in Paris.  Gregory's is more of a "down home" style club, intimate and informal.  It's much like Smalls with close seating to the artists and a real cozy vibe.  The owner, Omar, is a steadfast and honest guy, hardworking and jumping around like crazy, serving drinks, seating customers, greeting friends.  It was nice, for once, to sit on the other side of the bar and watch some other guy sweat it out.  But I sympathized. I know so well that "smile through the tears" look as you pour out free drinks and count some empty seats.  The Duc Des Lombards is the opposite, it's much more formal and austere.  It's elegant in its presentation and much more about producing a show.  But there's also an after-hours and a jam and "les chats" do come out to hang.  Good vibes all around.  I know how hard Sebastien Vidal works to make this club one of the best in Paris.

The key, though, is the staff.  Both places have that true "jazz staff" - those selfless and dedicated hard-workers that make a good jazz club go.  I saw it immediately at Gregory's and then at The Duc too.  Jazz Staffers love this music and are often musicians or artists themselves.  They work tirelessly and deal effectively with jackass customers and egomaniacal jazz musicians.  They walk around the club singing Miles' solo on "Freddie Freeloader", note for note, along with the stereo.  They love this music and the atmosphere, and no matter how dedicated or hardworking the owner is, he can't do shit without a great staff.  I thought with pride about my own super-staff at Smalls and Mezzrow working hard while I was gallivanting around.  I couldn't ask for better than what we have - not only is Smalls by far the best club, it's got the best and coolest staff - the key for a great jazz club.

I wish everyone a healthy and productive week and urge you to look at our schedule and come through the clubs.

Regards,
Spike
