April 30th, 2018

Dear Friends:

Today, April 30th, is a holiday recognized by the United Nations called "International Jazz Day".  I remember being invited to the concert a few years back at the U.N. when this day was first created.  I found it remarkable that the United Nations would do something like this -to celebrate our music in this way.  And yet, what could be a more appropriate for a unifying vision for the world?  I've said it over and over again - Jazz is the international music for peace.  It is a true "world" music - open to everyone with ears that can hear it.  In my fortunate life, I've had the opportunity to travel the world from Beijing to Paris and to experience Jazz people everywhere.  No matter where they are from it seems that Jazz people share the same ideals and attitudes - generally pretty smart, compassionate people with pretty good senses of humor, senses of decency and order and love for art and culture.  Jazz is a challenging music - one that demands to be listened to, it is not superficial.  In it's highest form it can be a religious message - love, anger, pain - human messages that we can all relate to.   It's Human music!  And yet, cut from the cloth of African American culture, it is unique and direct and truly American.  If there's one positive thing to be said in regards to the United States it could be that we contributed this wonderful music to the world.  Hopefully the great message of Jazz - the beauty and joy and feel of this music can permeate the entire world and bring us together like nothing else.  Happy Jazz Day!

This is a happy jazz week for me as I have the opportunity to present one of my favorite jazz artists and one of the greatest pianists alive - Denny Zeitlin.  Denny came last year and had such a good time that we are doing it again.  At Mezzrow he's going to play two shows solo piano (pianists take note!) on Wednesday and Thursday and then come in with his trio featuring Buster Williams and Matt Wilson for the weekend.  This is a rare appearance and reservations are highly recommended.  Please click on the links below to reserve one of our 40 seats in the music room.
