Dear Friends:

The other night I was at Smalls.  We've just hit our busy season and the crowds are in full effect.  My staff is handling it with aplomb and grace and hardly breaking a sweat.  What used to scare the pants off of us has become normal.  People are excited.  They're taking photos outside of the club and whispering to each other about the legend of this place - Smalls Jazz Club, now in the hall of legends.  But the core business is still the same - founded on good will and good vibes.

The staff, my staff, is hand picked and each one a gem.  I saw my old friend Sebastian Vidal at the club.  Sebastian is the chief of TSF, the French jazz radio station as well as the head of Duc Des Lombards, one of the premier jazz club in Paris.  When he comes to New York (to "refresh", as he says) he always comes to Smalls and Mezzrow.  The other night he told me; "Spike, what you have here is very special.  The staff you have assembled and how they work here is something that I have not seen anywhere else.  What they are doing is amazing."  I only had to smile, nod and agree.  It's like putting together a good band - find the right person for each job.  At my clubs all the managers are top-notch jazz musicians themselves but with a little special extra thing, which is true humility.  All the guys can play as well as anyone performing at the club but are also fine with a supporting role in making the club work - for the sake of the music!  It takes a special kind of cat.  Likewise, my bar staff.  Every one that's behind the bar is involved in the arts, photography, theater, comedy - they are at Smalls because it's a good job but also because they fit in the environment.  It's a good fit for all.  This creates an optimal working environment where all the people who are involved are there for reasons that have some spirituality in it.  This love imbues the venues with quality - rather Quality!  It is the opposite of the heartless and cold corporate culture that has taken over our society.  All I can say is that as an employer, I am blessed with a trustworthy and hard working staff.

As always, I hope to see everyone at the clubs.  Check out our schedule - don't forget to come early, the crowds are no joke.  Come at least 1/2 before the show you want to see.

Regards,

Spike
