May 18th, 2015
Dear Friends:

Sometimes a jazz club can be a holy place - a place where loving familiar people commune to celebrate or to mourn.  Recently Toby Bernstein, the mother of my friend Peter Bernstein, passed away.  Peter’s been my good friend since freshman year at the New School - we were together in the jazz program.  Pete’s mom, Toby (she never let us call her “Mrs. Bernstein”) was always involved with Pete’s friends the other young jazz musicians.  She would hang in the clubs to hear Pete and we all got to know her well.  Toby was compassionate, generous and wise and offered interesting philosophic conversation about art, music, and love. Toby was a master artist - an amazing sculptor.  I considered her my friend and always enjoyed time spent with the Bernstein family.

Last week I received a phone call from Joel Bernstein, Peter’s father, asking if we could hold the memorial service for Toby at Mezzrow. I was touched and honored.  He said that since Toby did not affiliate with any religious organization it would be more fitting to have it in a jazz club.  I agreed immediately.  The event was held last Saturday afternoon.  Mitch and I rearranged the club but not too much.  We realized that from a jazz club to a chapel was not that different.  Chairs, candles, flowers – but at this church, the bar was open.   We put Toby’s work on the walls and hung a piece of her sculpture.  The guests arrived, the family, their friends and colleagues.  Also, many jazz musicians were present to honor her.  Guests greeted each other with hugs, tears, toasts.  The mood was happy – it didn’t seem like a sad event but like a happy cocktail party.

The formal service began with Peter who played Horace Silver’s “Peace” – no words, just music – a fitting tribute.  Following Peter, members of the family and invited guests spoke to the audience -joyful remembrances, laughter and, of course, tears.  The service concluded with a duet of Peter and Brad Mehldau playing “I’ll Be Seeing You”.  Then, goodbyes, exchanges of numbers and everyone uplifted and happy - satisfied that Toby Bernstein was honored that day in a way she would have been proud of.

It made me think that a jazz club can be, and often is, a church.  Congregations are communities bound by a common love and this kind of thing exists in the jazz community – the common love for this music.  Jazz people around the world seem to share common attributes – intelligence, respect for art and deep spiritual feeling.  A jazz club is a place where the community can convene and share together the powerful feeling of this music and be bound together by it as a family.  That is true religion and, perhaps, the highest function a club can serve.

Peace to All,

Spike
