Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - December 26th, 2016
‘Twas the night before Christmas and I was playing the late show at Mezzrow.  It was a lovely and warm Christmas Eve in Mezzrow’s sacred music room.  Creatures were stirring – I hardly expected a crowd but to my surprise the room began to fill.  Soon the room was full of joyful faces, laughing and drinking.  Tyler Mitchell and I began to play and the crowd came with us – they were there for music, not talk.

The crowd was a mélange of humanity; a Hindu couple sat together at a table.  At another, three young people from Israel.  Next to them were two young musicians from Greece.  At another table a whole family was celebrating Christmas together and yet at another, a couple, in love, made marriage vows right in front of the piano.   Tyler and I played some blues and some ballads and even a few choruses of “Joy To The World”.  It felt like the Christmas spirit in that room.

The symbolism of Christmas and Hanukah falling on the same night struck me as the perfect euphemism to take into 2017 – unity, peaceful congregation, jazz music and love.  At one moment, while playing, I had the idea that our fears and anxieties were being exasperated by the media – that the hatred and bias they report may not actually be true.  I had the idea that nearly everyone simply feels compassion for others and generally just wants to live in peace.  People who are the terrorists are a very, very small minority and have way too much power - based on fear and using the media to spread fear.  But we must not fear.  By embracing ourselves as Human first, we can overcome all our prejudices.  If we could, but for one moment, see the Humanity in every one of us, we could have peace.  Music is a key – peaceful co-habitation, in a club or a community.  How about a holiday to simply express gratitude and to unify in our Humanity?  It can work.  In the small world of the Mezzrow listening room there is world peace – why not on a larger scale?

I wish everyone an excellent week and my most fervent prayers for peace on Earth.
