“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”
― Ernest HemingwayA Moveable Feast

Dear Friends:

I was lucky enough as a young man to have lived in Paris - and was lucky enough to get to travel there last week on an impromptu vacation.  Paris was just beautiful.  The weather was excellent.  It was so nice to walk the streets and feel that Parisian vibe.  Classic and beautiful.

My first mission there was to track down the tomb of Mezz Mezzrow.  Mezzrow passed the last days of his life in Paris.  He was cremated and then interred at the famous Pere Lachaise cemetery.  I decided to walk to the 20th district where it's located and strolled around the hallowed grounds where Chopin, Jim Morrison and Michel Petrucciani are all buried.  Because Mezzrow had been cremated, he was located in the "columbarium" section, which has a maze of crypts.  Alone, and a bit spooked, I descended into the cool air of the crypt and into darkness.  Using the light from my iPhone I wandered about seeking and not finding but finally - finding Mezzrow's tomb.  It was just a simple onyx (of course) plaque with the inscription: "Milton Mesirow dit "Mezz" Mezzrow (Really The Blues) 1899 - 1972".  In tribute to Mezz, visiting fans had stuck marijuana rolling papers inscribed with messages of thanks, praise and affections to the stone.  I placed a single white rose, said a few words and then quickly got out of there back into the blinding sunshine of Paris.

One thing about Paris is that it may be the only other city in the world beside New York with a real "hanging out" jazz scene.  On my final evening before I returned to New York, I had a fantastic hang at the jazz club Sunside/Sunset, which is located in the Chatelet area of Paris and right near the other great jazz club, Duc Des Lombards.  I walked in the door and it was basically like going to Smalls on a good Saturday night.  There were so many great musicians there at that moment that I'd like to give the list.  Hanging out at that moment was: Danny Grissett, Billy Hart, Mark Turner, Adam Cruz, Ugonna Okegwo, Lew Tabakin, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, Bill Charlap, David Weiss, Kenny Washington, Peter Washington, Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, Luigi Grasso, Fabien Mary, Yves Brouqui, Giles Naturel and my piano hero Kirk Lightsey! It was a convergence of musicians all traveling in different directions and configurations who all happened to be in town at the same moment and had come to the Sunside to hang.  Unbelievable.  Jazz feels good in Paris.  It feels like it's stronger than it was when I was there 15 years ago.  Peter Washington and I discussed it and he said the same thing - that it's growing.  This encourages me to think that the music still has such a rich international family.  That going to Paris can be like coming home to my friends and to this music.  A feast indeed!

I hope to see everyone at the clubs this week!
