Dear Friends:

I remember my freshman year of jazz conservatory at the New School for Social Research.  It was 1986 - the first year of the program, then led by the beloved and unappreciated Arnie Lawrence.  It was there that I was introduced to pianist Kirk Lightsey.  He seemed like a swashbuckling pirate with the most elegant demeanor you could imagine.  He played bebop but with a totally modern and personal approach - the Detroit school, like my other teachers: Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones and my own dear Harry Whitaker, all from Detroit.  It's a certain sound - a way to play the piano.  I was just 19 years old and I asked Kirk; "how can I get chords like that?" (I just couldn't believe the sound of his harmony).  Kirk looked me thoughtfully in the face and then said gently, "it's a lifetime of study...".  At the time I was disappointed with this answer but as the years passed by I realized how true this was and how correct an answer - a lifetime of study, indeed.

Kirk Lightsey was the fireplug at Bradley's, the famed musician hang out of yore.  He was like a beacon of joyful energy and continuous party.  It was remarkable.  People often say that Mezzrow is the new Bradley's but I always feel sheepish about that.  Truth is, Mezzrow is like Little Lord Fauntleroy in comparison to the insane party atmosphere of Bradleys.  Mezzrow is like a polite child - cute, but...  Over the last 5 days we seemed to resurrect that old Bradley's spirit.  Thanks to my man Tony Hewitt, we brought Kirk and his wife to New York (he's been an expatriate living in Paris for the last 10 years or more) and we gave him 2 nights at Smalls and 3 at Mezzrow.  The last two nights at Mezzrow were, as they say, "off the hook".  The spirit of Bradley's seemed to manifest - it was a party.  Kirk, who is nearly 80 years old but looks 55, was in his element, shaking hands, laughing uproariously and playing some amazing jazz piano.  He had Ed Cherry on guitar, David Williams and then Don Pate on bass and even Victor Lewis for an evening on snare and brushes.  It was a joy to see the audience getting into it - the amazing spirit of jazz that can arouse and subdue - music for Human Beings created by Human Beings.  I've begged Kirk to move back to New York and take up residency again - we NEED him here to clarify the jazz spirit, to let people experience first hand the true vibe.

On Thursday I celebrate my birthday with another special musician, vibraphonist Lennie Cuje.  Many of you may not know his name but he is also a true jazz spirit and hero.  If you can make it by please do - or watch our shows live from our streams.  It's free to register to watch the live stream and we hope you become a subscribing member and get access to our enormous archive of Smalls Jazz history.

I wish everyone a peaceful week.  I pray for peace in these turbulent times.

Regards,

Spike
