Some thoughts on my birthday:

I was born 48 years ago on this day, right here on the island of Manhattan.  Life passes in a flash - childhood, college days, romances, conflicts, marvelous moments and marvelous people.  As I sit here I find it hard to grasp that it's all passed so quickly - like a lightning's flash: my life.  But I consider myself to be an unbelievably fortunate man.  Sitting here I feel no regrets but just a deep sense of gratitude - gratitude for all that I have and gratitude for all the amazing people that I known in my life.  My entire life has been centered around music and musicians and it's been a truly rich one.  I think about the musicians that I've known and the musicians that I've played with and the music that's been made.  My involvement with Smalls and the dense fabric of the musical social realm that exists there - that I've gotten to serve it in the capacity I have has been my greatest privilege.  Last night,  as I often do on busy Saturday nights, I stood on the top of the stairs and stared in the effervescent crowd bubbling and spilling over at 2:30 AM.  Harold Mabern was at the piano and a host of jazz celebrities, jazz students, jazz wannabe's and jazz lovers filled the room.  Everyone was happy, joyful in each other's company, laughing, rapping, drinking.  Man, it was heaven.  I thought to myself; "if this was my final night on Earth then I could leave content" and I said a silent prayer of thanks.

Thank you to all and have a wonderful week.  I hope to see you at Smalls!
