Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - October 10th, 2016
Dear Friends:

This certainly is a disheartening time to be an American.  The choices we are being forced to make are very confusing and, it seems, contrary to the integrity we've come to believe about ourselves and our country.  It's easy to get cynical and Facebook is covered with animosity and self-righteous snark.  It's all so fatiguing and soul-draining.

I know I sound like a broken record on this subject but I always want to come back to Jazz Music as a redeeming feature of our culture.  It's something that's still pure and abides in the realm of beauty, excellence and idealism.  I see it every night at both Smalls and Mezzrow - musicians trying their absolute best to really play and give to the folks who come out.  I see this across the board, from the seasoned veterans who do the main shows to the talented younger players who host our after-hours and jam sessions.  It's an environment of love, mutual respect and striving for excellence - night after night.  There's no pulling the wool over anyone's eyes or falsifying records or cheating - either you can play or you can't.  The musicians know this and so does the audience.  The fans who come to my clubs are a high-caliber cross section of Humanity.  They all seek the same thing - to commune in a jazz environment and be innundated with this music.   As Art Blakey said once; "jazz washes away the dust of everyday life" - we are here to clean and inspire.  We are here to prove that the human spirit is still pure, regardless of the garbage they throw at us and force us to eat.  Jazz is redeeming and jazz is edifying and it still exists in America.  It is our cultural heritage and something we can be proud of and protect.  Even in the worst of times the beauty of this music and what it conveys will prevail.

I hope everyone has had a chance to take a look at our amazing audio/video archive which, as of last month, hit a full nine years!  Nine years of nearly every show at Smalls recorded and searchable with the musicians who played and their info.  It's an incredible resource for jazz fans.  As a subscribing  member you get full access to this archive which grows by 30 shows per week.  All revenue collected from subscriptions is distributed directly to the artists and helps support the clubs.  We hope you consider becoming a member.

I look forward to seeing you downtown and in one of our basements at 10th street and 7th ave.

Kindest Regards,

Spike
