Dear Friends:

Life on the road is a cocoon.  Airports, hotel lobbies - different hotel rooms nightly, each one blurring into the next.  In a car, arrive to the venue - meet the owner, manager, staff, sound guy - set up.  Then, finally, the concert - the music that brought you out here in the first place.  As the days of the tour pass life becomes more cocoon like.  The interpersonal relationships within the band begin to mesh as we all fall into the same life rhythm.  Playing music with the same group for several nights or weeks at a time creates a unity that can't be replicated under normal life circumstances.  It is the cocoon of the road that unifies and blends the individual members into a whole unit until reborn and finally ready to fly at each concert.

On the road you visit cities and places unknown.  You enter as a stranger and guest.  You view life as an outsider - seeing how the people live.  Seeing the sites, buildings, streets and people.  You are among them and yet, still separated.  It's nice to return to a city or place that you've already been before.  It's nice to see familiar faces at your shows.  After a number of years you begin to create a family in each city - the same group of jazz people that are eager to see you and meet you each time.  I am now at the end of another wonderful SmallsLIVE tour of Washington state and Vancouver.  One that reinforces my idea of jazz being grassroots.  All our shows were home spun ones with beautiful, receptive and compassionate audiences - the best an artist could hope for.  We felt like a returning family playing for our closest friends.

I want to thank the folks from the West Coast who helped out so profoundly on this tour.  My thanks to pianist Danny Kolke who is running a marvelous non-for-profit to bring jazz to the North Bend area of Washington.  My thanks to Julian McDonough and his beautiful crowd up in Bellingham.  My thanks to Thomas Marriot for putting together a great live radio show for us as well as a cool night in the famous Tula's.  My thanks to my man Cory Weeds and all the work that he's done on behalf of jazz in Vancouver.  We have strong allies!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs this week.

Regards,

Spike
