March 2nd, 2015
Dear Friends:

It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of another jazz great.  Trumpeter Lew Soloff suddenly passed away this weekend without any advanced notice or anything.  One moment he was here and the next gone.  Lew was a joyful presence on the jazz scene.  Besides being one of the very best and most engaging modern improvisors, he was also a beautiful, warm and generous spirit.  He was always hanging out - supporting the music with advice and wry commentary.  Jazz is a stone fence and as each rock falls out the fence grows weaker.  Life is like that, though, sudden loss.  No explanation.  All we can do is try to be good people and to LIVE in the moment - live each moment thoroughly and without fail.  Live like each day could be our last and to be grateful for the wonderful things that we have, particularly this great music and its tradition.  Goodbye Mr Soloff, rest in piece.  You will be sorely missed!

We have some amazing shows at Mezzrow this week that I'd like to draw attention to.  Tomorrow night is trumpeter legend Phil Harper coming in with Italian pianist Massimo Farao.  On Wednesday and Thursday is the amazing Philadelphia pianist Uri Caine who will be playing duets with Mark Helias.  If you've not yet heard Uri, I highly recommend you discover this wonderful artist.  This weekend is my old classmate Eric Lewis who now goes by the nom-de-guerre ELEW.  ELEW has taken the rock-jazz world by storm - but do not fear, Eric is one of the finest pianists I know and with him is the great young bassist Ben Williams.  This will be an interesting weekend.  On Sunday we have double feature - Bucky Pizzarelli with Ed Laub early and then the amazing Grant Stewart with Tardo Hammer and Peter Washington later.  Lots of music at Mezzrow.  Check out our site.  Don't hesitate to reserve an advanced seat.  The weather is finally getting nice and it's time to go out again.

My best wishes to you and your loved ones!

NOW: A cover paid at Mezzrow also gets you admission to Smalls.
