SmallsLIVE Newsletter and Weekly Schedule

A few words about pianist Alan Broadbent.  Alan came in yesterday afternoon to do our ninth SmallsLIVE Workshop and it was really special.  We've been moving right along with our SmallsLIVE Workshop series and it's getting really exciting to see the collection grow.  Once we get to about 15 or so we will begin to release them for the public.  We are already using the workshops to create academic music classes, our first class debuting at Prinz Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Netherlands this September.  As far as the workshops go, It's fascinating to watch each musician take their own approach to teaching - everyone's got their own style and agenda.  Alan came in like an open slate - he had no agenda.  Like his music he just let it happen.  He began by playing a tune (along with the wonderful Don Falzone on bass) and then began talking.  In his calm and gentle way, he spoke of his own path in jazz, his influences and about the importance of swing and the feel.  He spoke of phrasing and to make everything "sing".  As advanced as he is harmonically it wasn't a very technical class - it was more of a spiritual meeting addressing Human issues such as connection to your audience and beauty.  Alan Broadbent revealed himself to be a deep thinking artist and a true original.  He was extremely generous with his time and energy - it was edifying.  Later that evening he performed the main sets with Don.  Even though he had been working continuously from 2 PM that afternoon, he kept pouring out one great solo after another - enrapturing the audience and leaving everyone with a big smile on their faces.  One of the true rewards of the position that I'm in is the opportunity to be around artists such as Alan and to participate in the music that they share.

As usual, we have a remarkable week of music.  Please have a look at our schedule and choose a show or two.  I do hope to see you at the clubs and wish everyone a peaceful and productive week.

Regards,

Spike
