SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
July 16th, 2018

Life is circular.  Events can reoccur years later like a theme in a jazz variation, the same and yet different - somehow changed.  I'm currently on tour with the SmallsLIVE Collective, a group that represents Smalls Jazz Club and the music that is played there.  In the band is alto saxophonist Jesse Davis (now an ex-patriot living in Verona with his wife and daughter), drummer Joe Farnsworth, trumpetist Joe Magnarelli and bassist John Webber. As I write this from a hotel room in Rome, I think about a dive bar on the upper west side that used to exist called Augie's.  Augie's was a dirty place at a time when New York City was still rough around the edges.  We were all kids then and eager to play as much as possible.  Augie's was a hang for my entire generation of jazz musicians.  We were cutting our teeth in the big city.  At the age of 21, I was fortunate enough to get the gig as part of Jesse Davis' group and played every Friday and Saturday for nearly a year before Jesse handed the gig over to Joe Farnsworth.  Joe took the gig and developed it into a lifetime long residency.   Augie's was funky and weird and you had to go around the room with a little basket if you wanted to make any money at all.  This was a time in New York when the hang was still raging.  Jazz was vibrant in the city and there were many clubs to play in.  Augie's, though, was the hang for us and we played hard.  We were still young enough to be arrogant and we were all driven to excellence, fueled by the fire of the great jazz tradition that became ours.

Fast forward 25 years and here were are still playing together.  On the road together, the same cats - the same Augie's cats.  Greyer and wiser but still playing hard with the same fire and passion of our younger selves.  In fact, glory-be, better than we were.  Purified by the relentlessness of time, our intensity has been magnified.  Our need for recognition and growth has been replaced by the simple joy of playing and without pretense.  No more arrogance now, humbled by life, instead filled by extreme gratitude for the chance to play another night, another gig.  Still swinging hard and still revering the great-ones like the little students we are and always will be.  We've seen it all now, we've seen them come and go.  But, glory-be, here we are, still hitting hard.  What a miracle!  In my mind's eye I am on the bandstand at Augie's.   I see Jesse blowing his heart through his horn, Joe playing his drums with his ferocity and accuracy, Mags blowing his soulful melodies, John thumping his perfect quarter-notes.  I open my eyes and I'm now on a stage in Italy, still boys, still living jazz to the fullest.  What a blessing!

My Best Regards,

Spike

Catskill Jazz Factory presents:
Alphonso Horne & Chris Pattishall

Louis Armstrong, the revolutionary and highly influential trumpet player, is one of the most recognizable icons of jazz. Throughout his life he had profound musical connections with pianists who impacted his playing and career development.

Trumpeter Alphonso Horne and pianist Chris Pattishall re-animate Armstrong's legacy from a unique perspective: the pianists who performed with and influenced the legendary trumpeter. From his second wife Lil' Hardin to Earl “Fatha” Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Clarence Williams, and Dave Brubeck, this program presents a broad range of Armstrong's career through the lens of these relationships.
