Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - May 9th, 2016
Dear Friends:

One of the wonderful things I've discovered in the last 10 years at the helm of Smalls and Mezzrow is the pleasure and responsibility of running a small business.  I'm sure anyone out there that does the same will agree with me - it's a huge amount of work.  But small business, I believe, is still the bedrock of this country.  I've learned to handle taxes, lawyers, inventory, logistics and doing a payroll for my hard working employees.  More importantly, I've discovered the community of other business owners in my neighborhood and the bond that exists between us all.  I know all the restaurant and store owners in the vicinity of West 10th street.  I know them by name and greet them as friends.  We commiserate about slow nights, problems with the city or with serving our customers and the Greenwich Village community.  It's a tight knit group of folks running small stores in the Village - it's expensive and challenging to stay open but the rewards are great and I'm not speaking of financial rewards but the satisfaction of having a vibrant community and neighborhood.

Mezzrow, since it's inception nearly two years ago, has been very positively received by the city and neighborhood.  Smalls, of course, is already an institution in the Village having been there now 22 years.  Both clubs have won a number of awards and accolades (Mezzrow was named "Best Jazz Club of 2015" by the Village Voice).  We've also had our share of articles and interviews.  However, just last week we were contacted by the Greenwich Village Society For Historic Preservation, a wonderful organization whose mission is:  "...to preserve the architectural heritage and cultural history of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. GVSHP is a leader in protecting the sense of place and human scale that define the Village’s unique community. "   (click here for their website)

They informed us that we had been chosen by their committee for an award to businesses that make "significant contribution to the quality of life of our neighborhood".  There will be a ceremony in June at The New School and Mitch and I will be there to receive this award on behalf of Smalls and Mezzrow.  I can't say how much this means to me.  Of all the honors that we've gotten in the last 10 years, this one seems the most important.  It recognizes the hard work we've done and not just for jazz but for the culture of Greenwich Village and New York City.  Speaking for Mitch, I know that it has always been part of our operating philosophy to be part of the great cultural heritage of this part of the city and also the great tradition of jazz music that has always been in Greenwich Village.  I'd like to thank Joan Schechter, Katherine Schoonover and Sam Moskowitz from the GVSHP for this recognition and this honor.  It means the world to us.

As always, we have an amazing week of music ahead.  Please check out our schedule.  Also, please consider becoming a subscribing member of SmallsLIVE (click here).  Subscribing members get unlimited access to our enormous audio/video archive of shows and also directly support the artists and the clubs.
