             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
October 5th, 2015
Dear Friends:

I always feel a sense of foreboding when I see a police car pull up in front of Smalls.  My heart jumped into my mouth when on Wednesday night a squad car followed by two black SUV's pulled up in front of the club.  Men in dark suits starting pouring out of the vehicles.  Then a tough looking fellow came to the door, where I was standing collecting cover charges.  "Are you the manager?", he asked, all business.  I tried to be nonchalant; "yes, how may I help you?".  "We have a VIP that wants to go into the club.  But we need to check it out first...".  In a flash, he and another guy descended the stairs as I anxiously followed them into the packed club.  I think they were somewhat perplexed as they surveilled the scene - the sight of an octet performing on stage and dozens of folks packed into that tiny space.  They spoke to each other and then into their invisible radios.  "Roger that", was all I heard.

"Ok, their coming down", the serviceman said to me.  "Who, may I ask, is the VIP?", I quizzed him.  It turned out to be the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras and his wife.  They were in town for the big event at the U.N.  It was their last night in town and, according to the burly guard, they were in the mood for some jazz.  Within moments in came the Prime Minister and his wife accompanied by a few more imposing guards.  I tried to create some room for them to sit but it was too packed.  Fortunately a couple of seats opened up at the bar and so I had the recently re-elected leader of Greece and his wife seated at the Smalls bar.  They seemed very happy there.  The Prime Minister is a young man and after he took off his jacket you would never have known that he was anyone other than one of dozens of fans sitting in the club, albeit with a secret service contingency.  The guards faded into the background, tense and watchful, extremely professional, not kidding around for one second.  Prime Minister Tsipras and his wife, on the other hand, seemed very happy and delighted to be at Smalls.  I made my way behind the bar and took the time to introduce myself and to shake their hands and welcome them.  They were both very gracious.  Then his wife told me - "we had been to Smalls together about 10 years ago.  Ever since we've always wanted to come back.  We decided that tonight we would do that!"

It made me so happy to hear that Smalls had these kind of fans.  We poured a scotch for the PM and a white wine for her and let them, for one moment, relive their experience from 10 years before, which was probably a much simpler time for them.  No longer at the U.N, but in a crowded bar, a room full of jazz lovers and Bebop singing its song of joy and freedom for all to share.  No economic crisis - just some swinging sounds.  Jazz wins, as it always does, the music for all the people world-wide!

I think that unless something major happens, we will be launching our new site by the end of the week.  We're just in the final testing period and still trying to get musicians to register.  By the way, if you're a musician who has performed at Smalls anytime in the last 8 years and haven't gotten a invitation-link then reach out to me, either on Facebook or my personal email and we'll set you up.

I wish everyone the best and look forward to seeing you on the East and West corners of 10th street and 7th ave.  Smalls and Mezzrow - the clubs for World Peace.

Love,

Spike
