SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
August 6th, 2018

Dear Friends:

It never fails to amaze me that people really seem to read and enjoy my newsletters.  I get a lot of compliments and when I miss a week or two I hear from folks.  They get worried that I'm quitting or something's not right.  The fact is that I sometimes simply run out of time  and can't do it.  What it reminds me though, is that there's this international community of people who really care about Jazz music and particularly what's happening at Smalls.  I hear from folks that it keeps them "connected" to something that's really important to them.  It makes me understand how important the work we do at the clubs actually is.

I consider myself greatly fortunate. I'm in the environment night after night.  I see the lines of eager and expectant tourists waiting to get in, snapping selfies in front of our neon sign.  Smalls is iconic these days, there's no getting around it, and I see and feel the excitement of the people.  They walk down the stairs and into a dark, beer stained room, seat themselves amoungst strangers and try to adjust their eyes.  Then the announcement and the band starts - Bang!   The sound of live acoustic Jazz.  Many of these folks never even see a person play an instrument, let alone encounter a virtuoso or a whole group of virtuosoes.  It's mind blowing.

I consider myself greatly fortunate.  To see the Cats swing through, glad handing and hugging as if they hadn't seen each other in years, even though they were just hanging the night before.  Raucous laughter, the same jokes and stories - the legends are told and retold.  Egos are stroked and others crushed.  There's no career track, you are judged on how you play and how you handle yourself.  The family gathers nightly to convene and to hang - the eternal hang.  I've been hanging now since day one of Smalls, soon to be 25 years.  25 years of hanging and the funny thing is that it never gets old or changes.  I always simply marvel at the phenomenon that unfolds night after night in that club.

I consider myself greatly fortunate.  I am a Jazz Musician and I can come to the stage as a leader or sideman.  I can sit from the vantage point of the piano bench and look into audience.  I can experience the great power of Jazz music as it's spontaneously created on the bandstand, psychically communicating with the other musicians to create something larger than all of us.  To be in musical communion with the audience.  To play Jazz in the hallowed and proven bandstand of this fetid and beer stained room, Smalls Jazz Club in all it's magic.  It's a great blessing and one that I don't take lightly.

I wish everyone a productive and peaceful week.  I hope to see you at the clubs!

Regards,

Spike
