SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule May 27th, 2013

Hello My Friends:

Ah Ha, dressed to impress, A another night on the town listening to that good ole Jazz Music.  Jazz is that form of music where musicians come together and turn spiritual light into sound (acoustic or electric).  Jazz is elegance, jazz is extravagance, jazz is the coordinance and cadence of conniptions and fits, delivered independence. Shucks, some musicians feel as though good Jazz music is good sex (no pun intended).  Jazz music is internationalle , Jazz music is universalle, dare I refer to Jazz music as immortalle? In any event, I will have Jazz music in my home and my heart forever and ever, Amen!

Robert Kendal

Smalls Jazz Club has a resident artist.  Some call him by his nickname "Ghetto" but he's told me that he doesn't like that name and prefers his given name, Robert Kendal.  I'm not sure when exactly Robert started hanging out at Smalls but he soon became an entrenched figure, a nightly presence.  Robert's medium is mostly colored markers but also crayon and some pastels.  He draws every group nearly every night.  His style is distinct, somewhat of a graffiti-style but with an amazing amount expression and manages to capture each musician somehow perfectly.  He always draws the group at the bottom of the page and then leaves a large space at the top to write a poem or some message.  I've quoted one of my favorites above.  Robert is a beautiful cat and well worth speaking to if you see him in the club.  He seems a throwback to another age when bohemianism was still a possibility - that an artist  could simply draw night after night, unapologetically.  He lives  just to draw and paint and to document a scene and make his own commentaries.  For me, he is an important part of our artistic family and reflects the spirit of Smalls - community, bohemianism, thinking outside the box, expression of beauty & commitment to art.  He sells his work and if you have a few extra dollars, I recommend buying something from him.  You never know, it may be worth millions one day...

This Week At Smalls:

We have a stellar week ahead of us.  Beginning on Monday night with the Peter Bernstein quartet which features Donald VegaDezron Douglas & Billy Drummond.  This is the same group that Pete brought into the Vanguard a few months ago and it was killing!  Be sure to check that out.

On Tuesday we have an appearance from Seamus Blake who is co-leading a quintet with tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek.  In the group is Aaron Goldberg, Matt Clohsey and Bill Stewart.  I'm sure this is going to be an interesting and groovy evening of music.  Please be sure to stick around afterhours for Kyle Poole & his "Next Generation" jam session.  Here you can hear the "20 somethings" play and feel better about jazz being in good hands for the future!  Be sure to check out Kyle's interview this week in our Smalls Interview Blog - click here!

Wednesday and Thursday Smalls will be hosting the Brooklyn Underground Jazz Festival.  We generally do this every year and the program is a good mixture of bands from this organization.  We'll be presenting three bands a night.  On Wednesday is Owen Howard's  band "Drum Lore", followed by vocalist Tammy Scheffer's sextet and then closing with Rob Garcia and his excellent group.  On Thursday is Dave Smith's band followed by Dave Cook and his trio and then closing out the night with Adam Kolker and his excellent group.  This is a lot of music packed into two nights.  One cover gets you all the shows (per night) - so come on out and support Brooklyn in Greenwich Village.

This weekend our 10:30 PM show on Friday and Saturday night is pianist/composer Emilio Solla and his group "Bien Sur!".  Emilio is an amazing pianist and composes Tango and other works with an interesting group that features Tim Armacost on tenor, Victor Preito on accordian, Jorge Roeder on bass and drummer Ziv Ravitz.   This is joyful and festive music and worth coming out to hear.  On Friday at 7:30 PM we present the trio of the excellent veteran pianist Steve Ashe.  Steve is a consumate player and a tasteful, hard swinger.  On Saturday for our 7:30 PM show is the soulful Hayes Greenfield and his co-led group with Robert Rosenberg.  With Dean Johnson on bass and Scott Neumann on drums, this is an original and engaging group.

On Sunday we are delighted to have an appearance from guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli who will be coming in as a duet with guitarist Ed Laub.  These guys are a lot of fun, Ed sings and Bucky swings!  Following them is the amazing Johnny O'Neal and his trio.

We appreciate your support and look forward to welcoming you to Smalls Jazz Club.  Come on out and hear some live music!

Best Regards,

Spike Wilner

All About Jazz profiles SmallsLIVE

"Since its launch in 2010, the SmallsLIVE record label has been offering a substantial sampling of the outstanding jazz talent consistently featured at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City's Greenwich Village. Musicians who appear on the label range from the great veterans Harold Mabern and Jimmy Cobb to contemporary players at the top of their careers like Larry Goldings and Roy Hargrove, not to mention a mainstay of the Smalls scene: up-and-coming young musicians quickly making names for themselves, such as Dezron Douglas and Marcus Strickland."
