Dear Friends:

I walked by The Cornelia Street Cafe on its final night.  Throngs of folks waited to get in - a line of artists and observers eager for the last artist salon.  I had met Robin Hirsch, the proprietor and sprit of the club, on several occasions.  Once recently he invited me for a solemn lunch to discuss the reality of running a club in the current hostile environment of Greenwich Village.  It was candid and sobering but I never thought that he would really close.  But sure enough, with the flip of a switch and the click of a lock, another New York institution went dark.  The night I went by it was too packed to really get in so I decided to come back later.  I arrived around midnight and there was still quite a hang.  I sought out Robin and managed to shake his hand and give him a "thanks".  43 years in the Village - say what you want about it or the place but that's a hell of an accomplishment.  Smalls is about to hit its 25th anniversary next May.  Robin Hirsch rode out a beautiful dream for a long time.  Job well done.

And yes, how sad.  Honestly, I stepped into that club and saw art work on the wall, funny articles and chatchtkas everywhere.  It was a real joint.  Old timers, friends, lifelong employees - a work/live community that only a truly intimate family business is capable of generating.  I breathed one breath of that club and the old New York came back to me.  My inspiration for Mezzrow and the thrill of a real bar populated by real denizens.  The beautiful and eternal hang.  The old New York of sophisticated drunks, talking about art and kibbitzing - jokes, decent wine, good music, romance and fights.  The cafe life - the beautiful and eternal hang.  Glorious but must end sometime, yes indeed.

I think of my beloved Smalls and I know my own secret weapon is our audio video archive.  We've been broadcasting and archiving since September of 2007 - nearly twelve years of recorded shows.  I've gotten some grief over my policies but my mind is towards the future - the future when maybe there are no more jazz clubs in Greenwich Village, just a waste land of Starbucks and corporate facades.  Zombie people wandering throughout the fake landscape.  But if some brave soul is inclined to search - to shake off the social network fog and be curious about what was, they could find our archive.  A treasure-trove of music, undiscovered gems from the period 2007 to ... many years, entire careers documented, long gone jazz heroe's work carefully documented for the future scholars.  That's our legacy, not just smoldering ruins but a wonderful gemstone buried deep in the Earth.  A treasure to be discovered.

Peace,

Spike
