             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE

Dear Friends:

My hard-working partner and founder of Smalls Jazz Club, Mitch Borden, has a set of credo for the club that has guided me over the years.  Number one credo has always been to serve the music and the musicians who make it.  Number two credo has been our "never say die" policy, even if it seems impossible.  With the blizzard raging on Saturday I began to doubt if we would be able to live up to that standard.  We monitored the weather as it got worse and worse.  Mitch was outside, dutifully shoveling snow, keeping the Smalls entrance clear.  As the afternoon wore on we consulted.  I was anxious and Mitch, as always, clear headed and calm.  "If you close today nobody will blame you, of course...", he said - giving me an out but at the same time gently reminding me of our credo.  I thought of the famous inscription on the U.S. Post Office at 33rd street -

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

I got in touch with my incredible staff - Marjorie Swartz, Hannah Beaumont, Carlos Abadie - steadfast and committed.  "Yes, we're good for it", they all responded.  I got in touch with the musician, Joe Magnarelli (as grizzled a jazz warrior as you could ask for) - "I'm down, bro...".  So, it was on.  Smalls was to open even if the rest of the city was buried up to the neck in snow.  And so we had an evening of music at Smalls that night.  Like some kind of safe-haven of bebop, some insane trudgers and bewildered tourists trickled in.  It wasn't exactly a crowd but there was a quorum.  The band played and swung hard.  Jazz was created and another night was put into the history books of the ever-growing SmallsLIVE archive.

Joe Magnarelli arrives at the club during the blizzard...

In the end, this is what this music is all about - dedication and passion.  Nothing can stop it.  Neither snow nor rain stays these cats from the swift completion of their appointed choruses.  Swing on, my friends.

As usual some great music this week at Smalls and Mezzrow.  Please consider subscribing to SmallsLIVE and support the artists and the clubs and get unlimited access to our enormous archive of music - it's all there for you.

Blessings!

Spike
