             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE

Dear Friends;

I was thumbing through an old Downbeat (June 27th, 1968) when I stumbled apoun an interview with Wes Montgomery.  This was near the end of his life and at a stage of his career when he was enjoying great success.  At this point, he was famous and beloved, touring and doing big recording projects.  The interviewer asked him about his success and Wes responded with:  "Success is a big thing but not a great big thing (to me)...".  He then went on to elaborate:

"Everything relates to life.  Some musicians feel so personal about their contributions that they cut off the rest of the world to concentrate exclusively on their thing.  I don't indulge in music to the extent that it destroy's my interest in other things.  With me, music is still my hobby."

I was really struck by this statement.  One of the greatest guitarist in the history of jazz and for him music was still "a hobby".  This really made me think about the purity of art and the trap musicians are put in with trying to earn a living and sell their music.  When the pressure is on to earn it can start to diminish the real reason for music, which is the joy of playing.  By keeping your art separate from your living you can keep it pure.  Wes Montgomery was a family man and always had a "day job" - as famous and and great as he was, he was so humble in the face of the music.  Also, the reverence he had for the music kept it pure - a hobby is something we do for joy and our own pleasure, not to grind out a few dollars.  The joy of Wes Montgomery's music reveals this purity.  You can hear him smiling and playing all of that soulful joy - his private world that he shares with everyone.  Making a living is fine but to keep art in the realm of the pure means to detach it from the marketplace - a hobby.

I try to keep the same attitude with my music and even with the clubs.  People often ask me "how's business?" and it's a funny question for me to answer.  I think from the perspective of a "businessman" I'd have to answer in some kind of negative way - taxes, neighbor problems, quiet nights, razor thin profit margins, etc, etc.  But I like to smile and say; "well, we're not the Exxon/Mobile Corp" (and thank the Lord we're not...).  But from the perspective of Art and Spiritual Profits, "business" is great - fantastic music being played night after night, wonderful and considerate audiences, a beautiful vibe - two lovely havens for the music on each corner of West 10th street.  It's miraculous.  As long as it's not a "business" we're great - running these clubs can be a hobby, something we love that gives us pleasure and allows us to share our great bounty with everyone else.
