"Deep into autumn
and this caterpillar
still not a butterfly"
Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694)
Autumn already? Could the summer have passed so quickly? It does seem so - and yet this caterpillar is still not a butterfly. Of course, it doesn't mean that it will neverbe a butterfly, no, Butterfly-Hood is imminent - just it takes longer than you think, sometimes.
The plan is the day-to day - the summer into autumn, seeking growth daily. The important thing is the effort made. Concentrated effort over time will produce a butterfly. This is true in physical exercise and equally true in mental/spiritual exercise. Musicians know better than anyone that daily practice will yield results and eventual mastery. We can apply this same mindset to perfecting ourselves as human beings. Eternally emerging from our cocoons as the seasons eternally change about us. Perhaps, eventually, it will be an entire universe of butterflies. This is possible!
This Week At Smalls
On Monday at 7:30 PM I am please to present my friend Carol Morgan for her CD release "Retroactive". She's got a great band featuring Chris Cortez, Corin Stiggall & E.J. Strickland. Please come out to support Carol and take a copy of the CD with you. Following Carol will be Ari Hoenig and his trio with the wonderful Gilad Hekselman on guitar and Orlando LeFleming on bass.
This Tuesday we host the Savassi Festival from Brazil with a wide assorment of artists including Antonio Loureiro, Mike Moreno, Tatiana Parra, Leonardo Cioglia, Aaron Goldberg, John Ellis, Obed Calvaire, Dave Pietro, Helio Alves & Adrian Santos - all amazing musicians. Come on down and stay all night for one cover charge. This will surely be an interesting evening of good music.
One Wednesday and Thursday night we present a Smalls Jazz Club favorite - Seamus Blake and his quintet. This week Seamus is bringing in pianist Ethan Iverson, saxophonist Chris Cheek, Matt Penman on bass and Jochen Ruekert on drums. Seamus always puts on a great show and brings out a lot of folks. Come early! Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday night features an amazing organist - Jared Gold who has a killing trio with Randy Napoleon & Mark Ferber. Also, please talk to Jared about his rig - he designs and plays his own keyboards! On Thursday we present a man that you might see as our mild-mannered manager - don't be fooled! This guy is one of the best saxophonists on the scene. Nick Hempton and his quartet will play and feature Jeremy Manasia, George Delancy & Dan Oran. Also, please check out our Smalls Interview Blog with an interview of Nick. CLICK HERE
This weekend, Friday and Saturday, we have one of the best drummers on the scene presenting his music - Rodney Green. Rodney is bringing in an all-star quartet which features the great Jimmy Greene on tenor, Kevin Hays on piano and Doug Weiss on bass. This is sure to be a great presentation. Our 7:30 PM show on Friday features guitarist Josh Breakston and his excellent trio with Mike Richmond on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. Josh is not often at Smalls so take the opportunity to hear his group. Saturday at 7:30 PM is the wonderful tenor saxophonist Tad Shull and his quartet with Rob Schneiderman, Neal Miner & Joe Strasser.
This Sunday we present another Classical Salon. This is the fourth in the series and they have been very well received. The Smalls symphonic players are Eric Silberger - Violin , Rebekah Durham - Violin , Daniel Adams - Viola , Nina Monfredo - Viola , Amy Kang - Cello. They'll be playing string quintets from Mozart (K516 in g minor) and Brahms (op. 111 in G major). Come out and have a cocktail and here the most wonderful natural acoustics for string instruments - Smalls Jazz Club. At 7:30 PM we have The "JohnHarbison Project: "Song After Hours" which features Mary Mackenzie on vocals, Dayna Stephens, John Chin, Joe Martin and Dan Rieser. Following them is the great Johny O"Neal and his trio.
As always, I urge you to be compassionate to others and let us all yearn for peace universally. I hope to see you at Small and appreciate your support of the club!
