SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

March 31st, 2014

Dear Friends:

It's pouring rain out there!  It's about midnight on Saturday night and I just left a completely packed Smalls Jazz Club to run over here to finish up the newsletter.  Steve Davis has been taking care of business with his excellent quintet.  The people are jammed in like little fishes in a can but all happy hearing this amazing music.  Nobodies complaining, no ones saying a word.  Just smiles everywhere.  People are so happy to be packed in this little club while the rain pours and pours.

Working really hard on the SmallsLIVE revenue share system.  Each week brings some new challenges.  We aspire to share with the world our enormous archive of audio and video but there are some legal hurdles that we need to face.  We want this to be a legitimate service.  We're not trying to skirt any copyright laws and want to do everything the right way.  It looks like that means much more clerical work then we had intended.  I'm up for the task and ultimately I think that when we get this system finally in place it's going to be a game changer.  Artists can perform at Smalls and then we can license their performances and publish them for our worldwide audience to enjoy.  The artist will keep the copyright and we get the right to put it in our archive.  Simple enough, or so it seems.  I'll keep everyone up to date as things progress.

ALSO - next week I'm really excited to announce the beginning of our masterclass series.  Before I go there, however, I should mention that our very own Marion Cowings does his own vocal workshop at Smalls every Sunday at 1PM.  Vocalists should definitely get down there and receive the gifts of Mr. Cowings.   Our new series will feature a great artist once a month on a Saturday afternoon (2pm to 4pm).  The first artist in our series is drummer Greg Hutchinson on Saturday, April 12th, who has made his class open to anyone who plays the drums or has interest in the drums.  For more information please email and put "masterclass" in the header.

As always, I wish everyone an excellent week and urge you to act compassionately with others and yourself.
