Dear Friends:

Finally some really nice weather.  I love Greenwich Village just at this time of year when the winter and rainy spring are finally beginning to change.  It makes me think of this haiku from Basho -

The sun's way:
hollyhocks turn toward it
through all the rains of May.

It's my favorite time because I can sit on the front "porch" (as Ned Goold calls it) ie. the benches right in front of Smalls and watch the crowd go by - tourists, neighborhood people, many dogs.  Mitch, the master barker, greets each person with a smile and invites them to descend the staircase into our underground jazz chamber.  Early in the evening it isn't easy to entice because nearly everyone wants to be in the fine evening air.  Later, as it gets cooler, the club begins to fill.  The music goes all night, band after band until the early morning.  The day to night existence of a jazz club woven tightly into the fabric of the city - the rhythm of the people and the rhythm of the music merging into one single sound - the sound of life...

I look forward to seeing you at the club and wish you the best.  Please be kind to one and other and do good deeds.

Spike
