"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." - Plato
Hello My Friends:
No, I'm not a Greek scholar. I just Googled "music morality" and saw what came up and thought this quote from Plato had a lot of value. I am continually struck by the diversity of the audience that we see at Smalls. People of all ages and nationalities coming to our little bar to discover - something! Jazz, of course, and perhaps a taste of "late night" New York, but, also something else that I suspect is more fundamental. Something real that can only come from real music and real people interacting in a social way. Why has this become so rare in our society? How did we find ourselves in such a banal existence with such an insipidly boring popular culture? And how is this effecting us and our future? The SmallsLIVE motto is "We are dedicated to World Peace though Music" but are also dedicated to positive Human interaction, true morality and healing. That's the mission of Smalls...
That being said, as always we have a great week for you starting with an amazing double bill on Monday night. At 7:30 PM we have a rare appearance from the legendary Charnett Moffett, who will be performing a solo bass concert at the club. This will be an unusual concert and one you shouldn't miss. I'm curious to see what Charnett will bring to the table. Following Charnett is Ari Hoenig who has the truly amazing Kenny Werner on piano along with another bass virtuoso, Johannes Weidenmuller. Kenny has been a major force on the jazz scene and also a great teacher to many, including myself. He was my first real jazz piano teacher back at the conservatory days and unlocked many of the mysteries of harmony for me. Come out to hear these great musicians.
On Tuesday, we have our resident Smalls Legacy Band which features the "force of nature" Frank Lacy on trombone. Co-leading is the fiery Josh Evans on trumpet, Stacy Dillard on tenor, the wonderful Theo Hill on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass and Kush Abadey on drums. Following the Legacy Band is Kyle Poole and his "next generation" jam session - come out and hear the jazz stars of the future.
On Wednesday and Thursday we are featuring the remarkable Brian Charette and his sextet. Brian is an organist with a truly original viewpoint and is a masterful composer and improvisor. I understand he has an entire repertoire of new music to present and his band which includes, Mike DiRubbo on alto, Kenny Brooks on tenor, John Ellis on bass clarinet, Jay Collins on flute and Jochen Ruekert on drums, is a group of dynamic virtuosos. Come out and hear this aural treat. For our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday we are showcasing bassist Jamale Davis and his quartet with Pasquale Grasso on guitar, Stefano Doglioni on bass clarinet and Keith Balla on drums. We also want to remind you that on Wednesday we are dropping our paywall to the live video stream. If you haven't had a chance to check out our live feed than here is your chance to see and hear some great music (of course, we'd prefer you come to the club...) - just go to www.smallsjazzclub.com and click "Live Video" from 6PM to close on Wednesday. Also, please check out our new Interview Blog which features Brian Charette this week who speaks about his music, life, etc.
This weekend we have alto saxophonist Alex Graham and his quartet for our 10:30 PM show. Alex is an old friend and classmate and a terrific musician. He only comes to town once a year or so, so here is your chance to check him out. He's coming in with the excellent pianist Whitney Ashe, Phil Palombi on bass and Lawrence Leathers on drums. On Friday for our 7:30 PM show we have another rare appearance. This is from pianist Dave Stoler and his quartet which features Rich Perry on tenor, Nick Moran on bass and Jeff Hirshfield on drums. Dave is a phenomenal and tasteful pianist - well worth coming to hear. On Saturday for our 7:30 PM concert we present the wonderful Lafayette Harris and his group. Lafayette is another of the multitude of fantastic pianists that live and work in New York. He's got with him the truly amazing young vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, Antoine Drye on trumpet, the great Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Will Terrill on drums. All in all, an amazing weekend of music.
On Sunday we have our usual full day and night of music - 1PM is Marion Cowings vocal class. At 4:30 PM we are doing a Smalls Showcase for bassist Michael Blanco and his group which features a stellar cast of John Ellis on tenor, Gilad Hekselman on guitar, David Cool on piano and Ari Hoenig on drums - not bad for a Sunday afternoon. At 7:30 PM we have the wonderful Lezlie Harrison to sing for you. 9:30 PM is the legendary Johnny O'Neal and at 11pm the enigmatic and fascinating Ned Goold and his group.... whew!
Come to Smalls, be charmed and healed and enjoy our fare!

"This tiny, humble basement dive is the nerve center for New Millennium Bop. You don’t go to Smalls to hear radical experimentation; you go to hear bop warriors young and old play all the current permutations of their genre. The energy of the Smalls scene proves that bop, when it is astute, passionate and personal, is an inexhaustible musical language. SmallsLIVE recordings put you smack in the middle of the communal Smalls hang, the musicians in your face, the crowd up against you."
