Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - December 5th, 2016
Dear Friends:

I just completed a wonderful tour of Seattle and Vancouver with my trio.  As an artist it was gratifying to perform 6 concerts in a row.  But as someone who also presents music it was beautiful to see grass-roots organizations come together and make concerts happen for their respective communities.  I want to give some props to the folks behind these shows.  In Northbend, WA, pianist Danny Kolke organized a concert at a new space in town called the Piccola Cellars.  Danny had previously owned a club called Boxleys in the same town.  When Boxleys closed at the end of last year, he began to work with a local wine company to create a performance space in one of their warehouses.  The result is a comfortable stage and a relaxed but engaging performance environment.  We had a nice turnout of locals who were eager to hear jazz.  In Bellingham, WA, drummer Julian MacDonough organizes concerts through the Whatcom Jazz Music & Arts.  He organizes jazz concerts through the year and presents them in local halls or churches.  Again we had an amazingly large turnout, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, of eager and informed and very enthusiastic jazz fans.  In Seattle we had the chance to play at a jazz club called Tula's, which has been in the city for some time.  Trumpetist Thomas Mariott was responsible for organizing the gig for us.  He has been a strong supporter and advocate for this music in downtown Seattle and also plays his butt off..  Playing at Tula's is always a special feeling - something rare, a real jazz club.

The next leg of the tour was in Vancouver where the tireless Cory Weeds is the boss.  Formerly the owner of The Cellar Jazz Club, Cory now works with an organization called Coastal Jazz, which presents concerts and festivals through the year.  They've taken over the space at a restaurant called Frankie's and turned it into a bonafide jazz environment.  We played Friday and Saturday there to packed and loving crowds.  Cory begins the show by scolding everyone to keep quiet during the performance (bless him) but it's not necessary because the folks are really there to hear the music.  Finally, we culminated our week with a not-for-public subscription concert in a private home, which we recorded live for Cory's label.  This final concert was intimate and packed with truly beautiful and intelligent jazz lovers.  We finished our tour elated and inspired - and grateful.

In our current age it seems that the only way cultural events will happen is through the work of one or two individuals with strong vision and strong sense of duty.  The duty is to the art but also to the community.  Everywhere we went we met quality people - people who love jazz and want it in their lives.  It's not so easy to find in most places.  That's why guys like Danny, Julian, Thomas and Cory are so important - because they don't sit around waiting for something to happen, they make it happen.  Jazz by it's nature is grass-roots and can be at it's best in a makeshift performance space filled with people who really love it and want it.  It's like a church service or even a family event - everyone is related and happy to be there and unified by the spirit of the music.  It's beautiful to see in this day and age of endless Facebook snarkyness and complainers.  Get off of Facebook and organize something for the people!.  It may not make much money but the impact on the community can be enormous.  It's really our only recourse and our duty - to give back and to share.  This is what this music is about and it's what our society needs more than ever today.

Regards,

Spike
