Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - July 4th, 2016

Dear Friends:

Another great jazz master has passed - the wonderful Don Friedman.  Don had been a regular presence on the Smalls and Mezzrow scene in the last few years.  He was eager to play at the clubs and didn't care much about what his fee was.  He was just interested in playing and sharing his music with the community.  Make no mistake about it, he was a true master.  His credentials were extraordinary - he played and recorded with Booker Little, Joe Henderson, Herbie Mann, Charles Lloyd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Giuffre, Clark Terry, Ruby Braff, Lew Tabackin, Harold Ashby, Lee Konitz, Attila Zoller and many others.  He was John Coltrane's choice for the piano chair before McCoy Tyner was in the band.

My musical impression of Don Friedman was a true modernist but with an amazing swinging feeling - just the way jazz is supposed to sound.  He played glorious lines and lovely phrases with great taste and amazing execution on the piano.  As a person, he was a true gentle-man - always kind and funny.  He was also very complimentary to the younger players.  I had a few opportunities to play in front of him (it was intimidating) but he was kind and his observations insightful.

As the great ones pass on into infinity it firms our resolve to forge ahead with this music.  The torch must be passed from the masters of the past to the masters of the future.  It is the duty of every jazz musician to share and preserve, to study and to teach so that this unbroken aural tradition remains a chain through history.  In the Zen tradition they say "truth jumps from the teacher's heart to yours, like one candle lighting another."  This was the case with Don Friedman - a torch who's flame has been passed in the annals of jazz history, lighting our pathway to the future.

We pray for peace in this troubling time.
