It's been a great week for SmallsLIVE the record label. We were given the extremely rare privilege of being featured on the home page of the jazz section of iTunes. Not just one title mind you, but the ENTIRE CATALOG! For a small label like ours this is an incredible opportunity and gives us validity and exposure - it puts us on the map.
Itunes is special in that a label can't buy placement on their homepage or features. The iTunes editors select what they find interesting in the current batches of projects and feature that. This evens out the playing field in terms of "big" or "small" labels. You just got to make a great project and get their attention! My thanks to Garrett Shelton and the iTunes Jazz Department for their support. It must mean we're doing something right.
Furthermore, we have just released our four new titles, all of them great projects. Watch for (SL032) Harold Mabern's trio with Joe Farnsworth and John Webber. (SL033) Alex Sipiagin's Quintet w. Seamus Blake, David Kikoski, Boris Koslov & Nate Smith. (SL034) Joe Magnarelli's Quartet w. Mulgrew Miller, Dwayne Burno & Jason Brown and (SL035) Will Vinson's Quintet w. Aaron Parks, Lage Lund, Matt Brewer and Marcus Gilmore. They should be all up on iTunes by the time this goes out and the physical CD's should be ready by May 1. You can see the covers below -
At Smalls this week-
On Monday, we start out again with Peter Bernstein performing solo guitar. Following him is our resident Ari Hoenig coming in with another wonderful guitarist, Gilad Hekselman and bassist Orlando Le Fleming. At Midnight our erstwhile Spencer Murphy runs the jam session.
On Wednesday we have a great double bill starting with pianist George Burton, who's coming in with his quartet of Stacy Dillard, Luques Curtis & Rodney Green. George is a dynamic and engaging pianist. You can read his interview this week on our SmallsLIVE Interview Blog - CLICK HERE for the interview. For our "Round Midnight" Concert we are presenting the compelling alto saxophonist Ben Van Gelder who is coming in with a trio comprised of Joe Sanders & Craig Weinrib. Wednesday is also our "free video" night - if you want to stay home, just go to our website (www.smallsjazzclub.com) and click "LIVE VIDEO" anytime during the day.
On Thursday we present another amazing pianist to Smalls. Pianist Harold O'Neal is truly an original, florid and harmonically adventurous. He doesn't get heard too often, so take the time to hear his trio with Ben Williams and Rodney Green. It's going to be an amazing show. For our "Round Midnight" Concert following Harold is the truly wonderful Nick Hempton. If you've spent time at Smalls than you've seen Nick in the capacity as manager. However, my policy is to only hire managers who are also incredible jazz musicians (other managers are Spencer Murphy and John Merrill - both great). Nick is really worth hearing. He has an amazing sound, swinging feel and engaging personality. He is coming in with Jeremy Manasia, George Delancy & Dan Aran.
Our weekend is great all around. On Friday we start our evening with Grant Stewart's quartet which features Tardo Hammer. David Wong & Phil Stewart. Following Grant for both Friday and Saturday's 10:30 PM slot is a group called collectively "The Flail". The Flail's members include: Dan Blankinship - Tpt, Stephan Moutot - T. Sax, Brian Marsella - Piano, Reid Taylor - Bass & Matt Zebroski - Drums. This band has a book of all original music that is kind of zany and humorous but always swinging, eclectic and entertaining. On Saturday for our 7:30 PM show we have the great Joe Magnarelli and his quartet with Anthony Wonsey, Mike Karn & Jason Brown. Satisfying and great music all weekend!
I'd also like to remind everyone about some of our regular shows that don't get promoted too often - Wednesday from 6PM to 8:45 PM is Michela Lerman and the Tap Dance Jam. On Thursday from 6PM to 8:45 PM is Paquale Grasso and the afternoon open jam session. On Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM is Sam Raderman and the afternoon open jam session and on Saturday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM is the "Early Bird" jam session led by Dwayne Clemons.
Please come out and take advantage of our wonderful asset of brilliant musicians. It's all here for you!!
This is kind of an old article but colorful. I wanted to re-run it here so as to illustrate the vibe of Mitch Borden, a man who has single-handedly nurtured and saved late night jazz in New York - more to come as we approach our 20th year anniversary!
