SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
December 10th, 2018

Dear Friends:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news to all the naysayers, but Jazz is alive!  Music is alive!  Perhaps I live in a bubble and I most assuredly do.  I also firmly believe in the existence of the Sasquatch - not that I'm crazy, but I feel strongly that certain pockets of environment can survive well past when they are supposed to have vanished.  Little patches of the Earth where dinosaurs or bi-pedal remnants of some supposed extinct hominid branch exist untouched and very much alive.  Rare, yes, but alive.  Smalls and Mezzrow and little other parts of New York City and little parts of nearly everywhere I've ever traveled to - Beijing, Paris, Rome, Verona to name but a very few, still have these tiny living environments.  Come peek into our subterranean habitral, it's living down there man.  Jazz - the jazz culture, the people hanging, the cats, the dealers, the artists, the losers, the geniuses and pure angelic beings - all congregating, listening and LIVING.  Ok, rare as it may be, but dont be cynical.  Don't say - "man, that's just a myth", when you haven't gone past your own back yard.  There may be a Bigfoot just a few blocks away but you wouldn't know it if you're cynical.  Jazz is alive - call it what you want, Jazz Schmazz - but man, the music, the vibe - the joy.  It's STILL HERE.  If you don't believe me I'll take a plaster cast of a footprint for you or you can just check our live feed.

I want to mention our events for New Year's Eve.  At Mezzrow we are featuring the wonderful, Brazilian singer Maucha Adnet with her group that features Duduka De Fonesca, Helio Alves and Martin Wind.  We are only selling 40 seats in the front for the whole evening and it includes a champagne toast.  If you're interested in spending New Year's at Mezzrow, CLICK HERE.  At Smalls we will have the fantastic Johnny O'Neal and his trio playing two sets.  This will be first come/first served but you can buy a ticket at the door on the night of the event.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the clubs.  I wish the very best for you and your loved ones.

Regards,

Spike

Monday - 12/10
Burnett Thompson & Alex Blake

The performance this evening concludes 3 months of concerts, including a 6 city tour of China, and a new CD album. Autumn in Yunnan 云南秋日 is a collection of Chinese tribal melodies and new compositions by pianist/composer Burnett Thompson. The pieces are reflections on the depths of Chinese culture, especially the diverse elements present in Yunnan province, a region of towering mountains and tropical jungles. Numerous ethnic minorities live side by side, separated by language, clothing, cuisine, music, and art. Autumn in Yunnan 云南秋日 is an expression of nostalgia for these fragile elements, an attempt to evoke the singularity and beauty of past and present.
