Dear Friends:

I took the opportunity to see Don Cheadle's Miles Davis movie "Miles Ahead".  I had heard some mixed things and was a bit hesitant but went nonetheless.  I have to say that I really loved the movie.  It takes place in the late 70's during Miles' semi-retirement, a 5 year period when he wasn't playing.  This part of his life is very clearly described in Miles' own excellent autobiography (co-written with Quincy Troupe).  It wasn't a great time for Miles but precipitated his great comeback that was to define the final part of his amazing career.

The film is actually a Hollywood action film.  Miles is in car chases, gun battles and fist fights.  It's pretty amusing.  I know some musicians who were offended by it all.  But it's so darn funny, considering who the main character is.  I couldn't help but think that Miles himself would have loved to seen himself portrayed this way.  More importantly, it illustrated his relationship to his wife Francis and towards the music.  There were some beautiful scenes of him recording Porgy & Bess, performing live at the Vanguard and rehearsing with Herbie, Wayne and the fellas in his house.

For me, to just have this much reference to our beloved jazz heroes in a main-stream film is amazing.  Aside from being some solid entertainment and with a tour-de-force performance from Don Cheadle (he's just awesome), it's great to bring this much jazz awareness to the popular culture.  All the great records are referenced in this film and great names are dropped.  Some young person who may never have even heard of Miles Davis will a get a taste of the artist and of the culture.  This in itself is of extreme value.  Also, you have a cameo at the end with Herbie, Wayne, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spaulding, Antonio Sanchez.  Musicians such as Keyon Harrold (who played the trumpet parts for Cheadle), JD Allen, Ben Williams and many others that are part of our community and part of Smalls too, contributed.  It was a jazz movie made from jazz people.  Action film?  yes, but man, it was cool.

I look forward to seeing everyone out at the clubs.  Please also check out our audio/video archive.  When you become a subscriber you are benefitting the musicians and the venue.

Regards,

Spike
