SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule

July 15th, 2013

Dear Friends:

I want to dedicate this week's newsletter to Sally White.  Jazz fans from the Westport, Connecticut area should know this name.  Sally White runs an amazing  Jazz record store in Westport called Sally's Place and after 57 years in business (she opened on Main St. in 1956!), Sally is finally shutting her doors.   For those who know Sally's Place, it is really the end of an era.  Sally ran a friendly, homey store, where Jazz fans and friends met regularly to pick up obscure titles and to discuss the current scene.  Sally was on top of every new development in this music and knew the musicians and their styles extremely well.  She did all her business the old-fashion way, which is to say, to call her suppliers directly and to pay them upfront for their merchandise, no email, no internet.  I remember the first time I got a message from Sally to inquire about stocking SmallsLIVE titles for her store.  I was charmed by her and glad to send her the CD's she asked for.  Very shortly after she called again - her self-effacing and smiling voice on my machine apologetically asking for another order.  I was (and am) always glad to hear from her.  Last year, after doing a performance in Westport, I had the chance (thanks to my friend Dave Sampson) to get to Sally's Place and to meet Sally personally.  She is delightful and bubbly and it was a real pleasure to see her well run and organized store.  Well, after all these years, the economics have made it impossible for Sally to continue and, like many quality traditions, another characteristic neighborhood spot is destined to close.

Jazz is grass roots.  It's about community and people and I see this anywhere there is Jazz.  The folks who work in this field on any level do it out of love and duty rather than profit.  The profit in Jazz is in spiritual dollars.  It takes a special person such Sally White (or Mitch Borden) to throw all of their love into a place in order to make it live and feel like home.  This is what we have at Smalls and which everyone notices.  It's important in this difficult economic times not to let all of the quality, that is to say personal dedicated energy, evaporate into a banal and meaningless corporate entity.   This is our mission at Smalls - to keep the soul in New York.  The people are hungry for it.  To read more about Sally White, CLICK HERE.  Also, a nice documentary about Sally White here, please watch - CLICK FOR VIDEO

Our fundraiser to build the Musicians Revue Sharing system has gotten an tremendous start.  The response has been nothing but enthusiastic and supportive.  I'm touched by the number of folks who have reached out and already generously sponsored us.  We've had some wonderful media attention.  We had a nice mention in the Daily News Blog - CLICK HERE.  On Saturday, we had an incredible article published in the New York TImes about our project, Smalls and everything we hope to get done.  My sincere thanks to Nate Chinen for this piece.  Please CLICK HERE FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE.

This Monday we once again have an amazing double header.  Opening the evening is an appearance by the wonderful Peter Bernstein for a solo guitar concert.  At 10PM is our resident Ari Hoenig and his quartet which features the creative Tivon Pennicott on tenor, another amazing guitarist Gilad Hekselman, Shai Maestro on piano & Matt Penman on bass.  Also, please stick around for Spencer Murphy's after-hours jam session and hang.  It's become the hop-polloi Jazz night hang.

On Tuesday, I will be there again to open the evening with my trio - Yotam Silberstein & Paul Gill.  Following us is the classic Smalls Legacy Band featuring Frank Lacy, Josh Evans, Theo Hill, Stacy Dillard, Rashaan Carter and Kush Abadey.  At 1AM is Kyle Poole and his "next generation" jam session.

The Wednesday and Thursday we are showcasing guitarist Lage Lund and his quartet.  Lage did a beautiful Live At Smalls for our SmallsLIVE label and should be playing some of the tunes from that project.  With him is the talented Glen Zaleski on piano, Orlando LeFlemming on bass and Jochen Reuckert playing the drums.  Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday features a dear friend and amazing trombonist David Gibson who will be coming in with the dynamic Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Theo Hill on piano, Alex Claffy on bass and Kevin Kanner playing the drums.  Thursday night we have our resident Carlos Abadie and his excellent quintet rounding out the evening.

This weekend for our 10:30 slot I am proud to announce Joe Magnarelli and his quartet.  This will be a celebration of the release of his SmallsLIVE project, which originally had the late and great Mulgrew Miller at the piano.  This ended up being one of Mulgrew's last recordings (if not the last) - and he plays so beautifully on it.  With Joe will be the great Anthoney Wonsey on piano, Mike Karn on bass and Jason Brown playing the drums.  Our 7:30 PM show on Friday features Adam Brenner and his excellent quartet with David Hazeltine, John Webber & Mark Taylor - a veteran crew that will surely be swinging hard.  On Saturday at 7:30 PM is pianist Jim Ridl and his quartet with Brandon Wright, Boris Kozlov & Tim Horner.

Sunday always starts with Marion Cownings  and his vocal workshop at 1PM.  At 7:30 PM we are delighted to have the master Bucky Pizzarelli and Joe Laub in with the joyful duet. After them is the legendary Johnny O'Neal and his trio.  Please come on out!!

Best Regards,
Spike Wilner
