This past Sunday, The Porch in Portales officially called Drew Stevens as their pastor, and he and his wife, Ashley (pictured above), accepted. Drew has been doing the preaching since founding pastor of The Porch, Cody Brown, resigned last October to take a newly created position with Portales schools. Cody had served the church for nine years.

Previously, Drew had been the Worship Pastor for the church, but since he had filled in for Pastor Cody on occasion, the congregation asked him to assume preaching duties until they could decide on God's direction for the church. In the meeting this past Sunday, they indicated that they felt, after an extended time of seeking God, that Drew was to be their next pastor.

We congratulate Drew and Ashley on their new assignment from God and the congregation of The Porch for their effort in seeking the Lord and following His guidance in this matter. Let's all pray for the Lord to bless this congregation as they and their new pastor move forward together.
Tri-Area Baptist Association,

On behalf of Sivells Baptist Camp and the Baptist Convention of New Mexico, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for your leadership and contributions to the Sivells Dining Hall Generator Project.

This generator will give us the ability to continue to provide food service to our guests and protect against financial loss during a power outage.

A special thank you to pastor Rick Wilcher for his help in planning and installing the generator. We are blessed to have your support and prayers!!!

This year Sivells will celebrate 60 years of camp ministry on September 30th. Detailed information TBA.

Preparing to serve the next generation,
Jay Hammond

22 people from 11 Tri-Area churches participated in the Worship Bootcamp on Audio/Video ministry. The training was held at Parkland Baptist Church in their Fellowship Hall on Saturday, February 4th, from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Matthew Wolfe (above left), who is the technology director for Clovis School District and Roy Martin (above right), Worship Pastor at Parkland, led the workshop. Having received information from each participating church on what equipment they currently use, they took the first hour to field questions from the group. Some churches reported that they have just purchased new equipment or are about to, while others reported that their equipment was rather old and out-of-date.

After a break, the group gathered around various hands-on displays to ask more questions and learn about possibilities for their church's ministry. Matt and Roy were able to demonstrate various things with the hands-on displays for the participants.

At noon, the group had a lunch that was prepared by our DOM's wife, Donna McFadden. They enjoyed a Mexican casserole, beans and rice with tortillas, and apple cobbler for dessert.

While they ate, the group asked even more questions. They were also asked to share their thoughts on their experience for future planning of other worship workshops. The following are examples of the feedback received:

"Training was great! I appreciated the displays and the time taken for explanation. Add an hour for demonstrating sound adjustments and showing different type of feedback and how to correct."

"There was a lot of helpful information."

"Very helpful - couldn't have been better."

"This seminar showed me where and how to get my music and how to fully utilize my equipment."

"This seminar has cast a blinding spotlight on my ignorance. Thank you. I can only improve. Another seminar just like this one in 3 to 6 months might be beneficial."

"Thank you so much! I wish my knowledge would be more at the level of the persons who led, so it would be more fruitful. But we learned a lot and we will put it into practice. Thanks again!"

"Thank you for doing this. I know it's a lot of work to do this. I think it was very successful and I don't think anything needs to change except another hour?"

"Good meeting, informative and very much needed."

"It was nice to have others available to help. Thanks for the info. Hoping we can network and continue communication with each other."

"Thank you for the Q & A, the expert teaching, and providing resources. The food was excellent."

Tri-Area will be providing each person who participates in the upcoming Preaching Workshop a special gift copy of Calvin Miller's book, "Letters to a Young Pastor". The National Goal is $70 million.  The Week of Prayer for North American Missions is March 5-12, 2023.

Dave and Donna worshiped with First Hispanic Baptist Church in Tucumcari this past Sunday. They enjoyed the loving and accepting atmosphere at the church, as they felt very warmly welcomed by everyone. They also enjoyed the bilingual approach to worship utilized in the service, singing from a bilingual hymnbook (pictured below).

Jesse Cantu (pictured above with Dave) is the pastor of this church. Jesse lives in Clovis, but has been traveling to Tucumcari to serve this church for 17 years. He preached the sermon in both English and Spanish, speaking about the call of Abraham from Genesis 12:1-9. Afterwards, the church participated in the observance of the Lord's Supper.

On Monday, Dave had a lunch meeting with Kyle Bueermann with the North American Mission Board and Dusty Marshall, Director of Missions for Mountain Valley Baptist Association. The three of them met to discuss church revitalization and replanting efforts, among other things.

On Tuesday, Dave met with some ministry leaders in Clovis and then joined the Portales area pastors for their monthly lunch fellowship at El Rancho restaurant. On Wednesday, Dave met with Clovis area pastors for their monthly fellowship gathering at Mi Cocina restaurant after meeting with some Portales area ministry leaders in the morning. He was scheduled to meet with a couple of other pastors on Thursday morning.

The book of the week this week is The Apostles' Creed: Discovering Authentic Christianity in an Age of Counterfeits by Albert Mohler and is recommended by Dr. Joe Bunce, Pastor of FBC, Ft. Sumner. It is listed in the Good Books section of the Tri-Area website under the category of Systematic Theology in the Theology section.

The Apostles' Creed has shaped and guided Christian faith for almost two thousand years. Shared by Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox traditions, it is perhaps the most compelling statement of Christian doctrine the world has ever known. But do we know what it really means - and how it applies to us today?

In The Apostles' Creed, renowned theologian and pastor R. Albert Mohler Jr. works line-by-line and phrase-by-phrase through each section of the Creed, revealing the rich truths it contains, including:

  • the profound mystery of the Trinity
  • the miracle of the Incarnation
  • the world-shaking truth of the resurrection
  • the hope of Christ's return
  • the theological heritage contained in this ancient statement

The Apostles’ Creed is an often-overlooked treasure that contains the power to shape us for vibrant and steadfast living today, equipping believers to live faithfully in a post-Christian culture.
