March 16, 2023

Last week, we mistakenly put the date of March 18th as the date of this training. We were in error! The actual date is Saturday, March 25th! So that gives you an extra week to decide to participate. So, call or text either Dave (575-607-5495) or Elaine (575-714-7788) to let them know that you are coming.
An exciting development!

In a meeting with Ed Greene this past Tuesday, he shared with our DOM and some of our Tri-Area pastors that New Mexico Baptist Disaster Relief is making a "tweak" to its approach to ministry. In the past, their focus has been on helping with disasters when called to help by the SBC. The result has often meant needing to deploy for weeks at a time in other states. On occasion, of course, they have been deployed to help with clean up efforts and other work in connection with large disasters here in New Mexico, as well. But Ed says that has resulted in those who can participate being older, retired folks who can afford to be gone from home for weeks at a time.

To change this and allow more people to help, they are going to now consider help with smaller projects submitted by local churches and associations in New Mexico. Projects that might require a crew to work for one or maybe two days. This will allow folks who cannot afford to be away for weeks at a time to also participate. But they need to go through the two hour training that New Mexico Disaster Relief offers. Once they are trained, their name is added to a list of folks who receive notification of upcoming projects needing volunteers. If they can help, they respond accordingly. If they cannot, then they wait for the next notification.

Sign up for the training!

The Baptist Convention of New Mexico will provide training for all persons interested in becoming part of the New Mexico Baptist Disaster Relief ministry. The training will be hosted by Central Baptist in Clovis on Saturday, March 25th, from 9 a.m. to noon.

If you have questions, please call Ed Greene at 505-553-6086.

First Baptist Church in Portales is organizing a mission trip to Latvia in September. The group will leave on Sunday, September 10th and return on Wednesday, September 20th. Mike and Bev Howard are the mission trip leaders. The group will be serving with IMB missionary Audrey Whitfield, who is from New Mexico.
Right now, there are five individuals who have signed up to go on this trip. FBC is praying to be able to send a team of twelve people. Concerning this trip, the IMB says that it will involve doing literature distribution and evangelism in the city of Riga.

The Latvian culture is a northern Slavic culture. The Latvians are considered contemplative and quiet. Latvians take time to build relationships with newcomers, but once a relationship is established they are fast friends. The Russian speakers are a minority in Latvia making up about 40% of the total population. The Russian speakers are also from a Slavic background, also take time to build trust, and also tend to be more quiet and distanced from newcomers. Americans coming to serve amongst Slavic peoples should be mindful of these cultural tendencies.

People tend to dress more business casual. T-shirts and shorts are great for outdoor activities, but during meetings and other indoor activities dress is expected to be business casual. Personal hygiene is also important to Latvian culture.

Participants are encouraged to pack clothes that can be worn for warm outdoor activities and also for indoor and cooler evening activities. The wind in Riga can be quite strong as the city is situated near the Baltic Sea, so bring a windbreaker or raincoat to be prepared for unpredictable rainy weather and windy conditions.

This trip will involve extensive walking, so if you have a difficulty with a lot of walking or climbing stairs, this assignment is probably not for you. If you have dietary restrictions they will need to know in advance to be sure to accommodate you.

If you are interested in being part of the team for this mission trip, call Mike or Bev Howard at 575-562-9819 or email them at
Some time ago, we shared about Paul and Carey Kiekel taking 215 dresses provided by Dress A Girl New Mexico to a church in Manilla in the Philippines, through connections made by our state WMU Director, Melissa Lamb. Well, as you can tell by the picture below, they successfully met with a representative of Natividad Bible Baptist Church in Manilla at the airport and delivered the dresses.
The church will use some of the dresses as part of their ministry to villages around Manilla. Dresses were also sent to Cagayan Valley Northern Philippines for the indigenous families that live in the mountain area. Below is a picture of some of the dresses given to girls at the church's main campus in Manilla and in the Cagayan Valley.

The ministry wants everyone to know that however they are a part, they are contributing to God working miracles. One such miracle of provision took place a week ago on Wednesday.

On the previous Tuesday, at the Hispanic Pastor's Fellowship, one of the pastors who was going on a trip to Chihuahua, Mexico, the following Friday, asked Dress A Girl Ambassador, Donna McFadden, about dresses to take with him. At the time, she had to tell him that she only had 2 dresses. Well, guess what? God came through like He always does.

Donna has a group that meets at her home every Wednesday and some of them brought in dresses and shorts. She was able to pack 28 dresses and 25 pairs of shorts for the pastor to take with him in the suitcase pictured above.

This past Sunday, Dave and Donna joined in worship with the folks at Forrest Heights in Clovis. They were warmly welcomed by the congregation and enjoyed attending both the Sunday school hour and the worship service. Pastor Garlan Hughes (pictured above) brought a great message.

This week, Dave participated in the monthly fellowship for Portales area ministers at El Rancho restaurant on Tuesday at noon. Ed Greene, the director for the New Mexico Baptist Disaster Relief, was their guest. On Thursday morning, Dave joined with other DOMs in New Mexico in a Zoom meeting with BCNM staff.

The rest of Dave's week was spent visiting pastors and ministry leaders one on one, working on the development of a new Tri-Area workshop on Discipleship and Leader Development, and the newsletter. He also spent time updating the association website, doing sermon preparation for speaking this coming Sunday at Immanuel, Tucumcari, and preparation to speak to the senior adult group at Calvary, Portales on Tuesday.

The book of the week this week is The Power of Positive Praying, by John Bisagno. and is recommended by Dave McFadden, Tri-Area DOM. It is listed in the Good Books section of the Tri-Area website in the category of Theology, under the subcategory of Prayer.

Jesus was our model and teacher in prayer. By His life and His lips our Lord's constant fellowship with the Father pointed to the necessity of ours. But Jesus didn’t pray merely as an example to us. For thirty-three years, He lived as a man, tempted in all points like as are we. He prayed because He had to pray. He prayed because He must.
If the Son of God prioritized prayer, how more must we? And His prayers were answered as will be ours, if like Him we pray in His Will, in His Word and in Faith. For that’s the power of positive praying.
