A little over 40 folks participated in the "Don't Blow Up Your Ministry" webinar with Drs Michael and Kari MacKenzie, this past Thursday evening, February 16th, from 6 to 8 p.m. This event was jointly sponsored by Tri-Area Baptist Association and the Baptist Convention of New Mexico and had about an equal amount of participants from within the association as from elsewhere in New Mexico. The MacKenzies are the directors of Marble Retreat in Marble, Colorado.

Feedback from participants was very positive and encouraging, with several commenting on how beneficial the material presented was. Michael MacKenzie started things off with a general overview of the idea of burnout and what factors contribute to burnout in ministry. Then his wife, Kari, spoke to the role of the spouse and the place marriage plays in helping prevent burnout. The MacKenzies also provide each participant with an inventory to take as part of the webinar, which is designed to show how in danger one might be of experiencing burnout. They then fielded questions at the end of the webinar submitted by participants.

The webinar was video taped with the MacKenzie's permission and uploaded to the Good Resources section of the Tri-Area website. You can watch it by clicking

ARE YOU IN NEED OF CHRISTIAN COUNSELING? Tri-Area has four different Christian counselors who have offered to provide their services to anyone needing them. Whether you are a pastor looking to refer someone for help or an individual, couple, or family in need of help, call Dave at 575-607-5495 for a referral.

Sandia Baptist Church in Clovis had a work day this past Saturday, February 18th, that they called "I Love My Church" day. It was a day to not only get some needed projects accomplished, but an opportunity for members of Sandia to step up and show in practical ways their commitment to God and to their church.

Sandia is being assisted in their efforts through a partnership with the BCNM and sister Tri-Area churches as part of the Church Partnerships for Revitalization initiative (CPR). Lead Pastor Dean Turvaville said he would be happy to have help from partner churches, but really wanted Sandia folks to step up on Saturday, and boy, did they! With the exception of a crew from Restoration Baptist in Clovis who came to help run chain saws to remove some trees and bushes, the rest of the folks were all from Sandia.

A lot of work was done outside to clean up shrubbery and to clear space for a future playground. But much was done inside, too, as volunteers cleaned rooms, sorted materials, and even did maintenance on copy machines.

The church has recently repaved their parking lot. One new member, who happens to be an electrician, got the church sign to light up again and outside lights working again, also. Two old "swamp coolers" that the church no longer used were removed from the building and work was begun on a security fence behind the building. All told, five different loads of trash were hauled to the dump!

Lead Pastor Dean Turvaville and Associate Pastor John Birkey are leading the church to do a major outreach they are preparing for in July, where they will be giving away 400 backpacks to kids who attend Sandia Elementary. The church is already collecting school supplies to put in the backpacks. These are being collected at the display the church has set up as pictured below.

The Sandia advisory team met with Sandia leadership this past Monday night, February 20th, at 6:30 p.m. at the church. The group heard reports about the workday the previous Saturday. They also discussed how they might help provide needed school supplies for the backpack project the church is undertaking for Sandia Elementary school. Progress was reported on getting needed repairs done on the HVAC units in the building and encouraging reports were also shared about new members that God has sent to the church.

There was discussion about various approaches to ministry and believing God for volunteers, and possible outreach ideas. Pastor Dean said they are working on getting some remodeling done to the front of the worship center with the help of the Volunteer Christian Builders.

In addition to Pastor Dean and his wife Dezra, Associate Pastor John Birkey and his wife Hillary, were there to represent Sandia. Tar Henderson and Rick Britain were there to represent the BCNM. Dave McFadden was there representing Tri-Area, and different others were there representing partner churches: Cheston Fair from FBC Elida, Wayne Boydstun from Parkland Baptist in Clovis, Jake Gill from Restoration Baptist in Clovis, and Anthony Griffith from Calvary Baptist in Portales.

Listed below are the number of items that Sandia is seeking to collect for Sandia Elementary school. We will update the list as items are donated by individuals, partners, or churches. Partners and churches will be listed by name, while individual donations will simply say "individual". Items that are checked and in bold have been donated. You may donate a specific item or simply make a contribution that the church can use to purchase what they need. If you think you would like to make a donation, contact Dezra Turvaville at 575-760-3986.

First Baptist Church in Portales is organizing a mission trip to Latvia in September. The group will leave on Sunday, September 10th and return on Wednesday, September 20th. Mike and Bev Howard are the mission trip leaders. The group will be serving with IMB missionary Audrey Whitfield, who is from New Mexico.

Concerning this trip, the IMB says that it will involve doing literature distribution and evangelism in the city of Riga.

The Latvian culture is a northern Slavic culture. The Latvians are considered contemplative and quiet. Latvians take time to build relationships with newcomers, but once a relationship is established they are fast friends. The Russian speakers are a minority in Latvia making up about 40% of the total population. The Russian speakers are also from a Slavic background, also take time to build trust, and also tend to be more quiet and distanced from newcomers. Americans coming to serve amongst Slavic peoples should be mindful of these cultural tendencies.

People tend to dress more business casual. T-shirts and shorts are great for outdoor activities, but during meetings and other indoor activities dress is expected to be business casual. Personal hygiene is also important to Latvian culture.

Participants are encouraged to pack clothes that can be worn for warm outdoor activities and also for indoor and cooler evening activities. The wind in Riga can be quite strong as the city is situated near the Baltic Sea, so bring a windbreaker or raincoat to be prepared for unpredictable rainy weather and windy conditions.

This trip will involve extensive walking, so if you have a difficulty with a lot of walking or climbing stairs, this assignment is probably not for you. If you have dietary restrictions they will need to know in advance to be sure to accommodate you.

The Howards are hoping to organize a team of 12 people to go on this trip. If you are interested, you may call them at 575-562-9819 or email them at

Dave and Donna worshiped this past Sunday at FBC in Arch. Dave preached for Pastor Brian Tabor, who was out. The McFaddens had a great time with the congregation at Arch.

On Monday, Dave and Donna both went to the monthly fellowship of the Ft. Sumner area ministers at the Rodeo Grill restaurant. The wives of the pastors who attend were also invited. Monday evening, Dave participated in the Sandia Advisory Team meeting at 6:30 p.m.

The rest of the week, Dave had one on one meetings with different pastors and ministry leaders and worked on the newsletter for this week and the Tri-Area website.
Click HERE to check out the Good Books section of our website. We also have a Spanish version called Buenos Libros which you can check out by clicking HERE.
The book of the week this week is The 12 Essentials Skills for Great Preaching by Wayne McDill, and is recommended by Dr. Joe Bunce, Pastor of FBC Ft. Sumner. It is listed in the Good Books section of the Tri-Area website in the Preaching section.

In The 12 Essential Skills for Great Preaching, Dr. Wayne McDill draws on decades of experience as a preacher and homiletics professor to inspire other preachers to live up to their God-given potential.

Here are twelve proven ways to pack more content and effectiveness into every sermon, covering all of the bases from general preparation to the end result of increasing each listener’s faith. Recent seminary graduates and seasoned pastors alike will identify skills that need personal improvement, and McDill encourages them to strengthen such areas at their own pace and in whatever order they feel is best.
