June 2016

PictureHello ,

626 Golden Streets updates? We got them here!

June is all about Open Streets coming to the SGV, in a BIG way! We are within days of over 23 miles of open streets events, including SoCal's longest ciclovia event to date! Check this issue of the newsletter for information about participating and getting involved at VivaSGV Open Streets Sunday June 12th in El Monte-South El Monte and 626 Golden Streets Sunday June 26th!

Get Involved with 626 Golden Streets!

This will be the largest open streets event ever staged in the 626, and the first for 6 of the 7 participating cities. Needless to say, this people-powered event will only be possible with the help of amazing volunteers.

Can't get enough of open streets?

Closed to cars, open to everyone!

2016 is shaping up to be the most open-streets-friendly in SoCal to date, with over a half a dozen major "ciclovias" scheduled between March and October.
What are "Open Streets"?
"Open Streets" events or "ciclovias" are temporary street closures for automobile traffic that "open" roads for community members of all ages to walk, bike, dance, play, jog, run, socialize and more! Popularized over 40 years ago in Bogota, Colombia, whose “ciclovia” takes place every Sunday and public holiday from 7am to 2pm with an estimated 2 million participants spread out over 70 miles, these simple but powerful events are relatively new to southern California; the first and largest regular event in SoCal (CicLAvia) was only hosted in October 2010. Check out this video for a better idea of what these wonderful community events can look like.

Rim of the Valley Family Bike Ride

Join us for NPCA’s Rim of the Valley Family Bike Ride

Gear up and join NPCA for a FREE family bike ride on Saturday July 9 th along the Rim of the Valley corridor. All levels and ages of cyclists are welcome to join us in exploring an area that could one day be included in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Along the way, cyclists will stop to see and learn about local mountains and hidden gems, hiding in plain sight, in urban Los Angeles.

Riders will pedal from the Pasadena City Hall to the Arroyo Seco River bike path and onto the Audubon Center at Deb’s Park. The ride will be fully supported, with refreshments provided along the way.

By cycling through the Rim of the Valley corridor, participants will form a deeper connection to areas of outdoor landscapes and areas of significance to Los Angeles’ history and culture. Cyclists will also learn about next opportunities to speak up for their local national park and support the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area expansion.

Bringing the Park Service closer to the urban areas of Los Angeles will enhance the protection of critical natural and cultural resources and is a key focus of NPCA’s work in Southern California. The Rim of the Valley Bike Family Bike ride is part of NPCA’s #FindYourVoice initiative, to help inspire people to speak up for and protect America’s favorite places.

We hope you will join us!
